Thai School Shooting: Teen Educated via Social Media

A 14-year-old in Thailand killed eight people using a gun he learned to use via social media, prompting calls for stricter gun laws in the country.

A teenager in Thailand, armed with a handgun, opened fire at his home and school, killing eight individuals, including himself. Authorities revealed that the 14-year-old had taught himself to use a gun through social media. This tragic event marks Thailand’s deadliest shooting in years.

The boy’s actions may have stemmed from a combination of factors, including anxiety over academic pressures, issues within his family, and conflicts with peers. Senior police official Atthapol Anusit confirmed that investigations are ongoing, with 17 witnesses questioned so far regarding the shooter’s motive.

The incident took place in Nonthaburi province, just a stone’s throw from Bangkok. Initially, the boy fatally shot his grandparents using a firearm owned by his grandfather at home before proceeding to his school, where he targeted both teachers and classmates.

When asked if there were indications of premeditation, Atthapol responded that it was “probably” the case. Evidence collected by the police includes the weapon used, cartridge cases, the shooter’s mobile phone, and a knife discovered in his bag.

Investigators pointed out that the gunshots were “quite accurate,” with several shots striking vital spots on the victims. Notably, it was determined that the teenager had not received any formal training in shooting, nor did the police find proof he had practiced at a firing range. However, it came to light that a BB gun he had ordered online was previously confiscated by his teacher.

The boy had resided with his grandparents since the age of two, as his parents had separated. His mother described him as a “bright, cheerful person,” expressing profound shock over the incident, stating, “We are truly devastated, because no one thought this would happen.”

The teen’s father has since issued an apology for his son’s actions. Teachers at his school have characterized him as a good student with strong academic performance and noted that he was an avid gamer.

In light of the shooting, Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul announced intentions to introduce new gun control measures, reflecting a growing acknowledgment of the need for changes in firearm regulations.

As the investigation continues, the community is mourning the loss of victims. Memorials have begun outside the school, where people have laid flowers. A funeral was held for a 12-year-old girl who succumbed to her injuries two days after the tragic event. Her music teacher remarked, “She was a good kid. A kid who loved to do every activity.”
