Brandon Williams reflects on his football career, personal struggles, and determination to rebuild after a difficult period.

Brandon Williams, the former Manchester United defender, recently opened up about his tumultuous journey in professional football. At 25, he is now taking ownership of his past mistakes and working toward a brighter future in the sport.

Having made 51 appearances for United, Williams has faced his share of highs and lows. He describes his career as a cautionary tale of a young player thrust into the limelight without proper guidance. “I take full ownership of everything that’s happened to me. That’s why I always say to myself, ‘I got myself in this mess, I am going to get myself out of it,’” he said.

Last year, Williams received a 14-month prison sentence that was suspended for two years, resulting from dangerous driving at 99 mph. Though he acknowledges this incident as a major turning point, he views it as an opportunity for personal growth. “It made me grow up as a person and realise that this is real life,” he reflected.

During the last pre-season, Williams trained with Rotherham United, aiming to re-establish his career. He aims to prove himself again on the pitch after a challenging period, expressing his desire to make a positive impact. “I’ve let a lot of people down, and I want to prove a lot of people wrong as well,” he added.

Williams reminisced about the 2019-20 season, the height of his career with Manchester United, when he made his first-team debut and even scored his first goal. He cited that time as a whirlwind of excitement, yet expressed the difficulties he faced as pressure mounted. “I found it difficult, especially being from Manchester, as well,” he shared.

After a promising start to his career, the pandemic hit and stalled his progress. He moved out of his family home, a decision he later described as one of his worst choices. “I really should have stayed,” he admitted. Williams faced isolation which led to further struggles both on and off the field.

Opportunities dwindled the following season, prompting a loan to Norwich City. However, upon returning to United, he encountered a new coach and limited chances for playtime. His mental health took a hit as he grappled with feelings of exclusion, stating, “The difficulty is when you’re not being told anything and you’re just in the dark.”

In the summer of 2024, Williams parted ways with United, ending a 16-year relationship with the club. This was another challenging time for him, resulting in a temporary disillusionment with football. “I didn’t want to play football again,” he confessed. But eventually, he felt the pull of the game he loved and began his journey back.

A recent interview also revealed Williams’ regret over past behavior, including a period of using nitrous oxide, which he described as a misguided form of escapism. “It’s not what an athlete does; it’s stupid stuff,” he remarked.

Today, Williams is focused on rebuilding his reputation and making his family proud. “My Nan is on at me because she wants me to be doing that again,” he said, referring to his early career highlights. With a positive outlook and the support of friends and family, he is ready to face the road ahead. “I know it’s not going to be a quick process; I know I’m not going to be in the Premier League next year,” he concluded. “I’m ready to climb the mountain and get back to the top of it.”
