Ukraine responds to Iranian threats after targeting Iranian vessel, marking a crucial link in the ongoing conflict with Russia.
Ukraine has rejected Iranian threats of retaliation following its recent strike on an Iranian cargo vessel in the Caspian Sea. This incident, which took place on Saturday, indicates the first direct connection between the ongoing conflicts in Iran and Ukraine.
In response to the threats, Andrii Sybiha, Ukraine’s Foreign Minister, posted on X, stating, “Iran’s threats are unjustified and groundless.” He reiterated that Iran is a “direct accomplice to Russian aggression against Ukraine,” accusing the regime of supplying Moscow with weapons responsible for the deaths of Ukrainians since the onset of Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022.
President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that Ukrainian forces had accomplished “very good results” in their long-range operations in the Caspian Sea. The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) reported successful strikes against cargo vessels associated with Iranian military support for Russia.
Iran’s ambassador to Russia, Kazem Jalali, explained that the targeted vessel, which was named “Anna,” was anchored approximately 5 kilometers from the mouth of the Volga River when it was attacked. Ukrainian ambassador to Israel, Yevgen Korniychuk, clarified that the Anna was not carrying civilian goods but rather components intended for drones and missiles headed to Russia.
On Israel’s N12, Korniychuk indicated that both Ukraine and Israel are confronting a similar “axis of evil” from different fronts. Iran and Russia share a robust military partnership, with Iran supplying Russia with domestically produced Shahed drones since 2022, which were subsequently utilized in attacks against Ukrainian urban areas.
In a Sky News interview published recently, Zelensky also noted that Iran is planning to send ballistic missiles to Russia for use in the conflict. Reports suggest that short-range missiles have already been provided as early as 2024.
Ukraine has reportedly dispatched military experts to several Gulf states in recent months to assist in defending against Iranian drone strikes, which are perceived as retaliatory actions for US and Israeli assaults.
The Caspian Sea represents a strategically significant supply route connecting Russia and Iran, and Ukraine has consistently accused Tehran of complicity in drone attacks that have resulted in numerous civilian casualties. The strike on the Iranian vessel marks the first instance of Ukraine directly targeting an Iranian ship.
In reaction to the attack, Iranian officials expressed outrage, claiming it resulted in one fatality among the crew and several injuries. Iran’s foreign ministry claimed they have “never intervened in the conflict between Russia and Ukraine,” with Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi labeling the Ukrainian strike a “blatant violation of the UN Charter, orchestrated at the behest of Israel to draw Europe into its war.” He further warned that this incident “CANNOT GO UNANSWERED.”
In his statement, Sybiha highlighted Araghchi’s post with the words “Iranian lies” over it, simultaneously pointing fingers at Iran for attempting to divert focus away from Russia’s assaults on grain-carrying vessels from Ukrainian ports, which threaten global food stability.
For its part, Ukraine is intensively targeting the Russian shadow fleet of oil tankers to undermine a crucial revenue stream for the Kremlin. Zelensky refers to these operations as Ukraine’s “long-range sanctions campaign,” which is having a progressively serious effect on the Russian economy.
Nevertheless, some analysts have voiced concerns regarding Ukraine’s decision to confront Iran. Former intelligence officer Ivan Stupak stated, “The main idea… is to disrupt trading routes and cause as much damage as possible. But it’s not a good idea for Ukraine to have another battlefront with Iran. It’s not good for us.”
Olha Polishchuk from the Armed Conflict Location and Event Data Project (Acled) remarked that the Caspian Sea strike represents more than just opening a new front against Tehran; rather, it extends Ukraine’s campaign against networks that support the Russian war effort.
By targeting this supply route, Ukraine aims to escalate pressure on Russia’s supply channels, going beyond conventional combat zones.
