Mayor Valentín Lavín Shot Dead in Morelos, Mexico

Valentín Lavín Romero, the mayor of Temoac in Morelos, was shot dead on Wednesday, marking a tragic milestone as he becomes the 14th mayor murdered since Claudia Sheinbaum took office in October 2024. Lavín Romero had previously survived an assassination attempt earlier this year.

The shocking attack unfolded in broad daylight when armed assailants entered the town hall and opened fire, swiftly fleeing the scene on a motorcycle. Local authorities are still investigating, with the Morelos prosecutor’s office committing to explore all possible leads to identify both the motive and the perpetrators.

Lavín Romero, affiliated with the Green party and allied to the ruling left-wing Morena party, first became a target in late January when gunmen shot him at a petrol station. That initial incident was viewed as the beginning of a troubling saga.

Despite Lavín Romero’s previous survival, the attack on him is emblematic of a broader trend of violence against municipal leaders in Mexico. Since the start of the country’s military-led campaign against drug-related crime in 2006, nearly 100 mayors have been murdered. This worrying statistic emphasizes the vulnerability of local government officials, known to be the least protected and often coerced by criminal organizations seeking to cement their dominance over communities.

Recent reports have indicated that Lavín Romero allegedly had connections to local crime groups. His mother-in-law was arrested just last year for purported ties to a criminal organization involved in kidnappings. In a potentially related incident, two activists were murdered, leading a local activist group to demand an investigation into Lavín Romero’s alleged role in those deaths.

Following the first attempt on his life, a threatening banner appeared in Temoac, apparently from a criminal group, accusing him of aiding rivals and insisting that he align with their interests. This atmosphere of intimidation is not only dire for him but highlights the perilous conditions faced by many local officials.

Lavín Romero’s assassination occurs amid ongoing federal efforts to dismantle corruption networks linking municipal authorities and organized crime. Under Operation Swarm, Mexico’s federal government has arrested 85 officials across three states, including Morelos, in a bid to curb the rampant violence plaguing local governance.

While official figures suggest that Mexico’s homicide rates have roughly halved over the past year, security analysts caution that the real decline in violent crime may be less significant than reported. Ominously, over 130,000 individuals remain registered as missing, indicating a profound and ongoing crisis.
