Google’s Gemini AI app reaches 950 million users, closing the gap with ChatGPT in the competitive AI landscape.
Google’s Gemini is close to hitting a significant milestone, with the company announcing that its AI app now boasts 950 million monthly active users. During an earnings call, CEO Sundar Pichai highlighted that daily active users have tripled in the past year, illustrating rapid growth for the platform.
This surge places Gemini just behind OpenAI’s ChatGPT, which reportedly has about 1 billion monthly users, according to recent data from Sensor Tower. The impressive increase in users reflects the app’s popularity and effectiveness in the competitive AI landscape.
In October, Google had indicated that Gemini was attracting around 650 million monthly active users, a figure that rose to over 750 million by February when it reported its Q4 2025 earnings. This trend of consistent growth showcases the app’s capacity to engage users effectively.
To bolster its offerings, Google has been implementing new, cost-effective models. This week, the company introduced three new models, including the Gemini 3.6 Flash model. This new iteration is designed to outperform its predecessor in various tasks such as coding while utilizing fewer tokens, enhancing its cost-effectiveness.
Despite delays with its new frontier 3.5 Pro model, Google has announced that early work on Gemini 4 has already begun. The recent user statistics for Gemini suggest that the app is still managing to attract users at a commendable rate, fueling anticipation for future enhancements.
The quick growth of Google’s Gemini app not only reflects the competitive nature of AI technology but also suggests that Google’s strategic adjustments in model offerings are paying off. The company appears poised to continue challenging leading players in the market as it approaches the impressive benchmark of 1 billion users.
