Atlanta United are reportedly exploring a major move to enhance their attacking options, opening discussions with former Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez. The Uruguay international has become a leading target as the club seeks a high-profile player amidst potential roster changes.

With Atlanta United’s history of pursuing marquee players, the club’s financial position appears flexible enough to facilitate a deal if roster space becomes available. Nunez, who is expected to leave Al Hilal after losing his spot in the club’s registered foreign player list following Karim Benzema’s arrival, could be a key addition. Despite this setback, he had made a commendable contribution during his time at Al Hilal, netting six goals and providing four assists in 16 appearances.

Atlanta United’s pursuit may depend on the future of Emmanuel Latte Lath. The club’s record signing was omitted from Wednesday’s match against Charlotte FC, with sporting director Chris Henderson confirming that negotiations related to Latte Lath are ongoing. “We’re having a few conversations around him, and so out of precaution we’ve kept him out of this game,” Henderson stated, offering limited insight into the discussions.

Latte Lath’s departure could free up a designated player spot, making way for Nunez to join the team. The club is also eyeing Switzerland forward Breel Embolo as another option to strengthen their squad.

Nunez’s previous stint at Liverpool saw him shine, contributing significantly to the team’s success. He joined Liverpool in a transfer reportedly worth around $90 million from Benfica, helping the Reds secure the Premier League title with an impressive tally of 25 goals and 16 assists over 95 league appearances.

Although discussions with Atlanta are still in early stages, the club’s ambitious approach indicates their determination to attract notable talent. Currently sitting second from the bottom in the Eastern Conference with just 12 points so far, Atlanta United aims to reverse their fortunes with such strategic moves in the transfer market.
