Ukraine Strikes Back with New Mid-Range Drones

Ukraine’s new mid-range drones are disrupting Russian logistics, creating a significant tactical advantage on the battlefield.

Ukraine’s military has taken a decisive step in its fight against Russia by deploying new mid-range strike drones that allow its soldiers to conduct “free hunts” in areas previously considered safe for Russian forces. This new capability is significantly altering the dynamics on the battlefield.

The latest drones are proving crucial in targeting Russian logistics situated deep behind the front lines. Reports indicate that these drones have opened up access to areas rich in targets while confronting limited defenses.

Dmytro ‘Liber’ Zhluktenko, a former drone operator with the 413th Unmanned Systems Regiment ‘RAID’, detailed how the new technology works. By equipping a drone with a Starlink terminal, operators can establish a reliable internet connection, allowing them to survey and strike locations along critical highways. Once deployed, Zhluktenko describes the experience as “free hunt,” where opportunities to attack abound.

With strikes occurring as far as 100 kilometers behind enemy lines, Ukrainian operators are sowing chaos amid Russian military logistics. Zhluktenko noted that it’s somewhat straightforward to find targets in this region, where highways are heavily congested with military supplies, suggesting a structural vulnerability in Russian defenses.

Ukrainian drones have been instrumental in the nation’s defensive strategy against Russia. While short-range drones have been successful in targeting enemy troops and supplies near the front lines, long-range drones have conducted strikes on Ukrainian oil facilities and military installations within Russia’s territory. The mid-range drones now represent a critical tactical evolution, allowing attacks on targets ranging from 20 to 300 kilometers from the front.

By expanding their operational reach, Ukraine can now disrupt Russian supply chains, hitting warehouses, vehicles, and transportation hubs. This has serious implications for Russian forces, as slow logistics will place additional strain on their operational effectiveness.

Experts indicate that Ukraine’s strategic use of mid-range drones exacerbates Russia’s existing issues with air defenses, compelling them to make difficult decisions about resource allocation. Zhluktenko commented that even a significant deployment of interceptor drones would require extensive resources to secure such a vast area, rendering the situation a “win-win” for Ukraine.

Taras Berezovets from Ukraine’s Territorial Defense Forces echoed these sentiments, stating that once considered safe, Russian areas now face new vulnerabilities. This shift not only complicates logistics for Russian forces but also has psychological implications, increasing pressure on the Russian military.

Ukrainian officials including President Volodymyr Zelenskyy have emphasized the importance of this technological advance, underlining that it is central to the country’s ongoing efforts to regain the initiative in the conflict. Zelenskyy stated that the situation for Russia’s rear is now significantly altered, declaring that Ukrainian technology is capable of creating serious disruptions to Russia’s logistics.
