Iran’s Supreme Leader Absence at Funeral Raises Speculation

Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei was notably absent from his father Ali Khamenei’s funeral, which gathered thousands of mourners and senior officials in Tehran on Sunday. The absence of Mojtaba Khamenei, who has not been seen publicly since his early March appointment, has triggered speculation regarding his health, especially amid rumors suggesting he may have been injured in US-Israel air strikes that claimed his father’s life.

During the funeral service, attended by other sons of Ali Khamenei—Masoud, Mostafa, and Meysam—prominent figures such as President Masoud Pezeshkian and Revolutionary Guards chief Ahmad Vahidi were present alongside what Iranian authorities claim could be up to 20 million attendees across planned ceremonies in Iran and Iraq.

Funeral proceedings began on Friday, with the deceased’s body lying in state at Tehran’s Grand Mosalla. As part of the ceremonies, prominent Shia cleric Jafar Sobhani led a funeral service for the late supreme leader, who ruled Iran from 1989 until his February death.

Sunday was designated a public holiday across Iran. Later that day, Ali Khamenei’s body was set to be removed from the Grand Mosalla, commencing a procession through the capital on Monday. Speculation surrounding Mojtaba’s absence added to fears that Israel might also pose a threat to him, prompting discussions of security at the event amid a fragile ceasefire between Iran and Israel.

U.S. President Donald Trump commented that peace talks were paused in light of the funeral, remarking on the expanse of attendees, suggesting that a significant strike could take out many Iranian officials at once. Trump expressed surprise at the public mourning, questioning the sincerity of the tears shed for Ali Khamenei, while a mourner retorted, defending the authenticity of their grief.

In the lead-up to the funeral, there were calls in the crowd for violence against Trump, and poet Mohammad Rasouli stated that “Trump’s murder is our responsibility,” signalling the palpable tension residing at the event. Amid the overwhelming turnout, security measures were heightened as officials reported more than 4,000 individuals had sought medical assistance without any reported fatalities at the site.

Khamenei’s coffin was displayed alongside those of relatives killed in the air strikes, and the gravesite in his north-eastern hometown of Mashhad remains planned for Thursday. The ongoing ceremonies not only showcase the densely packed streets of Tehran and the sentiment of mourning for Khamenei but also leave many questioning the future trajectory of Iran’s leadership following this pivotal moment.
