Brian Mundubile, opposition leader in Zambia, has been charged with treason after disputing election results and going into hiding.

Zambian opposition leader Brian Mundubile has been charged with treason, following an arrest that has intensified political tensions in the country. His lawyer announced the charges, which include 17 others, on Saturday night.

The legal troubles for Mundubile began after he disputed the results of the recent presidential election. Incumbent President Hakainde Hichilema claimed victory, securing 60% of the votes, while Mundubile garnered 38%.

Mundubile’s arrest came after a deadly raid by authorities, which caused him to enter hiding. The raid in Lusaka, linked to allegations that the NRPUP party planned an armed insurgency, resulted in the death of a former cabinet minister and the arrest of other politicians.

After the raid, both Mundubile and his running mate, Makebi Zulu, sought refuge at a United Nations building. They were later detained when President Hichilema pressured the UN to surrender them.

Without the opportunity to mount a legal challenge against the election results, the opposition faced significant hurdles. Just a day after the election, security forces sealed off the courts, preventing any legal action on the final day to file challenges.

Pledging to continue the fight, Katolo stated that Mundubile looks forward to addressing the accusation in court. In his view, the allegations of a planned insurrection are “total fabrications” as claimed by the opposition.

As preparations continue for President Hichilema’s second inauguration on September 1, regional and international observers have reported a mostly peaceful election day. Nonetheless, Zambia’s Human Rights Commission has called for accountability regarding the outcomes of recent arrests and operations.

With tensions escalating, the public is closely monitoring the developments surrounding Mundubile and others charged. Political analysts and citizens alike are concerned about the implications of these charges on Zambia’s democratic processes.

Hichilema, reflecting on his election victory, expressed gratitude and a commitment to serve all Zambians.
