Virgil van Dijk faces challenges in Liverpool’s pressing system under Andoni Iraola, raising concerns about his role as captain.
With Jamie Carragher suggesting on Monday Night Football that Liverpool are not playing to the strengths of their captain Virgil van Dijk, the issues facing the 35-year-old defender under Andoni Iraola’s high-pressing approach have come into sharp focus.
In Liverpool’s recent 2-0 win against Como during their final pre-season friendly, a moment caught the eye when Dominik Szoboszlai and Van Dijk had a visible disagreement. Szoboszlai pressed forward only to find the ball smoothly passed into the space behind him, causing frustration.
As the Premier League season kicked off, it appeared that a pressing style could present problems for Iraola’s veteran captain. Early signs from the match against Newcastle raised concerns, especially when Van Dijk’s lack of urgency in stepping up contributed to an opening goal for the opposition. Carragher highlighted this lapse by stating that, “Virgil van Dijk should be higher initially and if he is higher he could then make the challenge there.” He pointed out the challenges for a defender approaching the twilight of his career.
Carragher elaborated on Van Dijk’s predicament, likening it to that of John Terry during his time under manager Andre Villas-Boas, noting that experienced defenders may be reluctant to adjust to newer, more demanding tactics. He stated, “It is not just that Liverpool need protection in midfield and need more players there, he needs protection. This is probably the first season where he cannot help anyone else, he needs help himself.” The intricacies of Iraola’s system could pose significant challenges for the Liverpool captain.
Though Iraola previously built an engaging Bournemouth side known for its aggressive style, the pressing system places specific weight on defenders, which could prove detrimental for Van Dijk. As seen in the Newcastle game, there were moments when the lack of pressure from Van Dijk allowed opponents to exploit space behind him, making defensive responsibilities increasingly challenging.
Despite previous accolades and recognition as a formidable defender, it has become evident that age has taken its toll. Van Dijk boasts impressive skills, including incredible passing ability, but his defensive tactics under pressure have raised questions. His top speed in prior seasons has shown a decline, further complicating his responsibilities in high-press situations.
If Van Dijk fails to follow the press, it amplifies Liverpool’s defensive woes, creating a precarious situation for the team. Fortunately, any tension between him and Szoboszlai appeared temporary, as Van Dijk later praised Szoboszlai’s leadership qualities even after a demanding match against Newcastle.
It remains to be seen how Liverpool will adapt as both the midfield and Van Dijk’s role are under scrutiny during this evolving season. With the pressure mounting, the captain’s future under Iraola’s system will be pivotal as Liverpool navigates through the challenges ahead.
