US Outbreak Linked to Taylor Farms Iceberg Lettuce

FDA identifies Taylor Farms iceberg lettuce as the source of a cyclosporiasis outbreak affecting thousands in the US.

Health officials in the United States have pinpointed the source of a troubling outbreak of explosive diarrhoea, with a sample of iceberg lettuce from Taylor Farms testing positive for the parasite responsible. The outbreak has impacted thousands of individuals across the nation.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced that the lettuce, supplied by Taylor Farms, had been confirmed as a cause of cyclosporiasis infections that have led to hospitalizations. Tellingly, the sample in question was identified as part of a shipment not included in an earlier recall issued by the company.

On Friday, Taylor Farms voluntarily decided to remove all iceberg lettuce sourced from central Mexico from the market and informed customers of the affected products. The FDA noted that no fatalities have been reported, though at least 94 individuals have been hospitalized because of infections.

The distinction between a recall and a voluntary product removal is notable; a recall requires the company to notify customers and reclaim implicated products, which often makes it a more extensive and costly measure. The FDA collected the relevant sample during targeted surveillance as part of its investigation into the outbreak.

“Taylor Farms has confirmed that this positive product is not part of their current recall,” the FDA stated. The company is now actively trying to determine whether any of the implicated lot is still in circulation or has reached consumers’ homes.

The first infections were detected on May 13, according to the FDA, and symptoms can take up to two weeks to manifest. These symptoms include prolonged watery diarrhoea, sudden weight loss, and a diminished appetite.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that thousands of cases of Cyclospora have been associated with the lettuce in Taco Bell restaurants situated in at least five states. Officials have advised consumers to avoid any shredded iceberg lettuce served at Taco Bell outlets in Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, and West Virginia.

Taco Bell has reported that it has completed the removal of the affected lettuce from its locations, ensuring that customers are no longer exposed to the contaminated product.

In response to the crisis, Taylor Farms confirmed that it has ceased receiving supplies from the implicated batch, suspended further distribution of the iceberg lettuce from Central Mexico, and is collaborating with the FDA, CDC, and state authorities to address the situation appropriately. Furthermore, the affected lettuce has been recalled across 27 states and also includes Marketside-branded iceberg lettuce sold at Walmart locations in 15 states, as confirmed by the FDA.
