Ukraine’s drone strikes target Wildberries warehouses in Russia, escalating conflict and impacting the economy.
An apparent Ukrainian drone strike has hit a warehouse belonging to Wildberries, Russia’s largest online retailer, often referred to as “Russia’s Amazon.” The explosion was reported in the Vladimir region, located approximately 112 miles (180 km) east of Moscow.
Ukraine has executed a series of attacks on Wildberries sites since mid-July, claiming that these depots assist in supplying the Russian military. This statement has been met with denial from Russia, which maintains that the facilities have no military connection.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has indicated that such strikes are essential in making the war more tangible for many Russians, who previously viewed it as occurring far away from their daily lives. The latest strike occurred after a series of reported attacks on the same facilities, with security experts confirming the targeting of logistics hubs used for military purposes.
In the wake of the recent attacks, Wildberries has revealed that it has paid over 40 million rubles (approximately £373,000) in compensation to affected personnel and families of those who died as a result of the strikes. This figure comes from its ongoing support for small and medium-sized businesses affected by these events, having distributed funds to more than 97,000 small and medium enterprises.
The strikes have not only brought catastrophic loss of property but also increased pressures on everyday Russian citizens and small business owners who depend heavily on the platform for their livelihoods. The company’s CEO, Tatiana Kim, noted that “every person in Russia” uses the platform, which affects a vast number of consumers and merchants across the country.
Moreover, the governor of Krasnodar Krai has reported that at least three people were killed by falling drone debris associated with another recent strike in southwestern Russia, which is indicative of the increasing danger posed to civilians amidst the conflict.
This drone attack on Wildberries warehouses falls within a broader initiative by Ukraine to conduct long-range strikes intended to disrupt military supply lines and decimate logistical capabilities. Such operations have intensified amid heightened military actions across the region.
As both sides continue to exchange fire, Russia has reported stepping up defenses around ships in the Azov-Black Sea basin, indicative of growing concerns over their maritime assets.
This ongoing conflict marks a significant escalation, especially as it directly affects businesses that form the backbone of the Russian economy, challenging the narratives each side has constructed about the war’s impact.
