UK Diplomatic Efforts for Detained Activist in West Bank

The UK Foreign Office has taken steps to address the detention of a British national in the occupied West Bank, bringing the case to the attention of Israeli authorities.

Finn Joughin, a 22-year-old student activist, was arrested in the Palestinian village of Umm Al-Kheir on Saturday after he was forcibly detained by Israeli settlers who had advanced toward the village.

A surge in attacks by settlers on Palestinian communities has been noted since the onset of the Gaza conflict, which began following the Hamas-led attack on Israel on October 7, 2023.

International law classifies all settlements in the area as illegal. Furthermore, outposts are also deemed illegal under Israeli law yet are often supported with state services and funding.

The clash occurred near Hebron, where settlers have recently intensified their presence. Eyewitnesses, including fellow activists, described a scene where Palestinian children were playing football when settler children intervened, prompting a response that involved dismantling a fence by a nearby house.

Video footage shared online shows Joughin trying to defend the fence with his body while a child was reportedly pushing against him. He was removed forcefully from the area and taken to a settler outpost.

Israeli police stated that a foreign national had disrupted public order and was detained by security from a settler community on suspicions of an indecent act involving a minor, among other charges. Police later transferred the case to their custody for questioning, with documentation sent to the Population and Immigration Authority for review.

According to Joughin’s lawyer, Inbar Shaked Vardi, all allegations have been categorically denied. Vardi mentioned that the initial charge against him was assault, but later, additional allegations were raised.

Joughin is slated to be deported back to the UK on a flight scheduled for Monday afternoon. Vardi expressed belief that the lack of further pursuit of charges likely means authorities won’t officially pursue closure on the case.

“Police use deportation as a means to rid themselves of activists in the West Bank while permitting settlers to act without restraint,” she added.

Other activists present at the scene dispute any inappropriate actions, asserting that it was the settler children who approached Joughin.

The UK Foreign Office confirmed that it is engaged in the situation. A spokesperson stated that officials from the British embassy in Tel Aviv have sought further details from Israeli authorities.

The violence noted throughout the weekend across various areas of the occupied West Bank even led to condemnation from Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who accused settlers of damaging Israel’s international reputation. President Isaac Herzog further described the weekend actions as crossing a “red line”.

In addition to the incident involving Joughin, reports indicated multiple attacks by settlers in the West Bank village of Qusra, necessitating military intervention to disperse those involved. Several foreign journalists were also injured during attacks by masked settlers in the locality of Jalud.

US ambassador to Israel, Mike Huckabee, remarked, “The half-million Israelis living peacefully are most disgusted by a small group of thugs,” in a statement welcoming the condemnation from Israeli leaders regarding the settlers’ actions.

The ongoing tensions and violence mark a critical point in the broader context of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, highlighting the challenges faced by foreign nationals and activists operating in the region.
