In a challenging week, Donald Trump experiences political setbacks, highlighting vulnerabilities that he may not readily acknowledge. His attempts to influence key issues have faced significant opposition from both allies and critics, marking a stark contrast to his usual narrative of control.

Among the recent challenges was a controversial decision by US Attorney Jeanine Pirro, a known ally, who chose to drop felony charges against former Olympian David Hearn for damage to the Reflecting Pool near the Washington Monument. Pirro cited that the damage stemmed from a botched installation rather than vandalism, contradicting Trump’s earlier claims that the incident was purely a case of vandalism. “She folded like an umbrella,” Trump expressed frustration in his remarks following the decision.

Adding to the political turbulence, Trump’s former attorney Todd Blanche faced strong resistance in his bid for a permanent role as attorney general. Republican Senators John Cornyn and Thom Tillis sided with Democrats to block his nomination, expressing concerns over a proposed fund intended to support individuals claiming they were politically prosecuted. Tillis dismissed the fund as a “payout pot for punks,” further complicating Trump’s efforts to navigate this issue.

Despite these setbacks, Trump remains defiant. He stated his commitment to keep Blanche on as acting attorney general and asserted his intention to push Congress for the fund’s authorization. However, the political realities of the Senate became evident as Blanche eventually complied with Senate demands, aiming to smooth the way for his confirmation.

Meanwhile, Trump’s handling of ongoing negotiations with Iran has also come under fire as he accused the Iranian government of deceit. He recently claimed to have called off a major military strike, which he described as the most significant attack since World War II. The statement was met with skepticism, as US officials indicated there had been no new negotiations, further straining public confidence in Trump’s foreign policy.

The American public’s disapproval of Trump’s handling of the war has compounded these issues, with recent polls indicating his approval rating at 33%. This reflects a concerning trend for the president, aligning with historical low ratings for second-term presidents. Trump, however, dismissed these polls and insisted that his real numbers were superior to the media’s portrayal.

As the congressional midterm elections approach, Trump’s ability to maintain political traction will be put to the test. Historically, he has demonstrated resilience in electoral situations despite facing opposition. Yet, the culmination of these political struggles indicates that he may be on a path that demands a reevaluation of his strategies and alliances in the weeks to come.
