Controversial influencer Andrew Tate and his brother Tristan made their first appearance in a Miami federal courtroom, initiating extradition proceedings to the UK where they are accused of serious charges, including rape and sex trafficking. Since their arrest on Saturday, the brothers have been held in a Florida jail.
Following a brief hearing, their attorney announced that they plan to contest the extradition. Speaking to reporters outside the courthouse, attorney Joe McBride maintained the innocence of his clients, stating, “They’ve never done nothing wrong. They shouldn’t be extradited for crimes they didn’t commit.” McBride further denounced the charges, calling them a “stitch up job,” and likened the accusations against the brothers to the legal issues faced by former US President Donald Trump, branding the extradition attempt as “political kidnapping.”
During the proceedings, which lasted only a few minutes, the brothers, clad in light brown prison uniforms and shackled at the waist and ankles, confirmed their understanding of their rights by responding, “yes your honour” when questioned. The subsequent court date has been set for July 27.
McBride suggested that the extradition process could take around 60 days. The case against the Tate brothers comes after the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) in the UK announced a wave of new charges—totalling 38—against them. The charges follow the receipt of additional evidence from Bedfordshire Police, bringing the total number of alleged victims in this case to seven.
The brothers, who hold dual British-US citizenship, were originally arrested in Romania, where they also face serious charges related to human trafficking and forming an organized group for the sexual exploitation of women. They have denied all related allegations. Since arriving in Florida in 2025, the Tate brothers have continued to assert their innocence amid growing scrutiny.
In addition to their legal battles overseas, the pair is also faced with a civil lawsuit in the US from a woman who claims that they coerced her into sex work, followed by defamation after she testified to Romanian authorities.
Andrew Tate gained notoriety as a self-proclaimed “misogynist” across social media, previously accruing viral attention for his extreme portrayals of wealth and masculinity. His comments on various social issues have led to his temporary bans from social media platforms, although he has since been reinstated.
