Spain Players Earn Top Honors at 2026 World Cup

Spain’s players showcased their dominance at the 2026 World Cup, bringing home three prestigious individual awards after clinching a 1-0 victory against Argentina in the final. Midfielder and team captain Rodri received the coveted Golden Ball, awarded to the tournament’s best player, cementing his pivotal role in guiding his team to glory.

Joining Rodri in the accolades was goalkeeper Unai Simon, who secured the Golden Glove award for the best goalkeeper, while defender Pau Cubarsi was honored with the Young Player Award for his exceptional performance.

These awards were decided by FIFA’s Technical Study Group, which includes former professionals and coaches. France’s Kylian Mbappe took home the Golden Boot for being the top scorer of the tournament, finishing with ten goals and four assists, surpassing Argentina’s Lionel Messi.

In addition to the Golden Ball, Messi and Mbappe were awarded the Silver Ball and Bronze Ball, respectively, as runners-up in the best player category.

Rodri, 30, played an instrumental role, starting all eight of Spain’s matches during the tournament. He previously earned the Player of the Tournament title during Spain’s European Championship victory two years prior, which led to him winning his first Ballon d’Or that same year.

Despite a challenging club season with Manchester City, where he battled injuries, Rodri’s performance remained stellar. Following a serious knee injury in September 2024, he participated in only 38 matches in subsequent seasons, yet managed to help his side win the Premier League title.

Rodri’s contributions were significant despite his interrupted appearances for Spain leading up to the tournament. His return to top form was evident throughout the World Cup, helping Spain secure their first championship since 2010.

Simon, age 29, became the second Spanish goalkeeper to win the Golden Glove, following Iker Casillas, who won during Spain’s previous World Cup victory in 2010. Simon’s impressive record included six clean sheets, the most by any goalkeeper in World Cup history, with only Belgium’s Charles De Ketelaere managing to score against him. In the final, Argentina posed little threat, managing only two shots.

Cubarsi, 19, participated in every minute of the tournament, anchoring a defense that conceded only one goal. This marked his first major international tournament, having previously not made the squad for Euro 2024, although he was part of the Olympic gold medal-winning team that year.

Kylian Mbappe also made headlines by winning the Golden Boot for the second consecutive World Cup, highlighting his remarkable ability to score consistently. He became the tournament’s all-time top scorer with 22 goals, surpassing the previous record of 16 held by Germany’s Miroslav Klose. Lionel Messi now stands at 21 goals, having also exceeded Klose’s mark during his illustrious career.
