A member of U.S. Vice-President JD Vance’s security team has been suspended and is under investigation for allegedly leaking sensitive information, the U.S. Secret Service (USSS) announced on Thursday.
The specifics of what was leaked remain undisclosed, but the USSS indicated that the agent faces a “potential criminal inquiry,” involving claims of compromising operational and information security. “Any conduct that potentially threatens the safety of a protectee will not be tolerated,” said USSS spokesperson Anthony Guglielmi.
The White House has opted to remain silent on the ongoing investigation. This development comes at a time when officials are warning that threats against protectees, including former President Donald Trump, have seen a sharp increase.
Vance and his family are entitled to round-the-clock protection from the Secret Service. In a press briefing on Wednesday, Secret Service Director Sean Curran explained that the agency is operating in what he described as the most dangerous threat environment of his 24-year career. Curran noted, “The threat level facing the Secret Service is off the charts.”
He detailed that agents have opened nearly 10,000 threat investigations since January, attributing the increase to a blend of online threats, lone actors, ideological extremism, foreign adversaries, and individuals grappling with mental health issues. Most of these threats now emerge online, overtaking traditional forms of communication like handwritten letters.
As the investigation unfolds, the atmosphere surrounding public safety continues to grow tense. Curran remarked that the current threat landscape represents one of the most volatile periods he has ever encountered in his career. The responses from both the Secret Service and law enforcement agencies are ongoing, and officials are committed to upholding the safety of those they protect.
