Rangers Trade Brett Berard to Canadiens for Trudeau

The Rangers trade Brett Berard to the Canadiens in exchange for William Trudeau, marking a significant move between the two franchises.

The New York Rangers have finalized a trade, sending restricted free agent winger Brett Berard to the Montreal Canadiens in exchange for defenseman William Trudeau. The announcement was made on Friday by both teams, marking a notable transaction, especially since it represents the first trade between Rangers president Chris Drury and his predecessor Jeff Gorton, who now leads the Canadiens.

Berard, a player originally drafted by Gorton, was projected to encounter challenges in making the Rangers’ opening-night roster for the 2026-27 season. In his brief yet eventful career, he has accumulated six goals and ten points over 48 NHL games. He had a promising start in the league during the 2024-25 season, tallying six goals and ten points in 35 games; however, he faced difficulties last season, failing to register a point in 13 NHL appearances.

His performance in the AHL was noteworthy too, as he notched 23 points in 30 games during the 2024-25 campaign, followed by 22 points over 41 games last season. Unfortunately for him, he faced stiff competition for places in New York’s forward lines from a mix of young prospects and established veterans.

On the other hand, Montreal’s Trudeau, a fourth-round pick in the 2021 draft, has spent the past four seasons in the AHL with Laval, where he finished the previous season with 20 points from 62 games. Despite his solid contributions, he has yet to break into the NHL, likely due to the depth of defensemen in the Canadiens’ system.

At 24, Trudeau provides versatility on the ice, showcasing skills that contribute both defensively and offensively. However, his overall game lacks a standout quality, which has been a barrier to his ascension within the organization, particularly with several promising defensemen, including Adam Engström and David Reinbacher, ahead of him in the Canadiens’ lineup.

The Rangers have identified a pressing need in their defensive ranks, making the acquisition of Trudeau a strategic move. Should he clear waivers, he may well find himself playing with AHL Hartford as he attempts to establish himself further.

As for Berard, now that he is no longer exempt from waivers, his chances of securing a role on the Rangers seemed limited, especially with the competition from fellow young forwards like Adam Sýkora, Jaroslav Chmelař, and Matt Rempe. His performance so far suggests he may be suited as a depth player within the NHL if he can carve out that niche.

With this trade, both teams hope that these changes will enhance their rosters as they look ahead to the upcoming season.
