Phil Foden targets a fresh start under Enzo Maresca at Manchester City, vowing to repay the club after signing a new long-term deal.

Manchester City midfielder Phil Foden is aiming for a “fresh start” under new manager Enzo Maresca following the signing of a long-term contract extension. Having endured a challenging period over the past season, Foden is determined to regain his best form after committing to the Etihad Stadium until 2030.

The England international is looking to revitalize his career as he embarks on this new chapter under Maresca, who previously replaced Pep Guardiola. This renewed commitment signifies City’s immense trust in his abilities, as they offered him a fresh four-year deal despite his struggles on the pitch.

Foden expressed his eagerness to validate the club’s faith in him, stating, “It has made me feel relaxed and I can just concentrate on being the best version of me and give back to the football club for them trusting in me. It is nice to see the support from the club and obviously it means a lot. It’s about time I try and repay them and give back to the club.”

He also welcomed Maresca’s arrival, acknowledging their existing rapport could help ease his adaptation: “Very good – a fresh start, a new manager and up to now, really enjoying it. It is very strange but I know Enzo from before, so that also helps. I know him quite well and what [he] is about. That has definitely helped, to have that relationship with him.”

After missing out on a spot in England’s 2026 World Cup squad, Foden noted that Maresca reached out to him personally, which further exemplified the manager’s character: “He [Maresca] reached out just after to see if it was OK, which was very nice of him, to show us this character and the person he is. He cares about everyone and wants to have a good relationship with the team.”

When discussing City’s aspirations for the season amidst significant squad changes, Foden maintained optimism: “I think we can win everything, but it’s obviously hard. We have still got an unbelievable team.”

Foden’s previous season was marred by difficulties, including an ankle injury and off-field matters, yet Maresca recognizes his potential and is committed to assisting him in reaching his prime form. The manager commented, “Phil is very important, like the rest. Knowing Phil from years ago, I know how good he is. It is my duty to help him be the Phil we all want. First of all, to be happy and enjoy football is most important. If he feels good, he can help us win titles.”

Maresca will make his debut as City’s manager this Saturday during a friendly against Inter Milan in Hong Kong. Despite the departure of veteran players like Bernardo Silva and John Stones, Foden remains confident that the Citizens can rise to the challenge across all competitions this season. His resurgence will be vital for City as they embark on this promising new journey under their new manager.
