Gary Neville believes Julian Alvarez would bring magic to Arsenal, urging the champions to strengthen their squad ahead of the season.

Arsenal commenced their Premier League title defence impressively, achieving a decisive 3-0 triumph over Coventry at the Emirates Stadium. During the match, goals were scored by Kai Havertz, Bukayo Saka, and Martin Odegaard, contributing to a dominant performance by the Gunners. However, amid the celebration, Gary Neville has called on the club to pursue Julian Alvarez from Atletico Madrid.

Neville, a football expert and columnist, expressed confidence that if Arsenal secures the services of Alvarez before the transfer window closes, they could elevate themselves from title holders to Champions League contenders. He stated, “What a squad [Mikel Arteta] has built. If he puts another forward into that, if they could get Julian Alvarez somehow, that would light this place up as you’d have a world-class striker to go with all the world-class defenders and midfielders.”

Arsenal, along with Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain, has shown interest in Argentina international Alvarez. Despite this, Atletico Madrid’s CEO, Miguel Angel Gil, has made it clear that the club is not willing to part with Alvarez, not even for a staggering £170 million.

Neville continues to urge Arsenal to test Atletico’s resolve, insisting that the addition of Alvarez would propel the team to new heights. “They wouldn’t just become Premier League title winners; they’d go the next step and win a Champions League. It’s a massive 10 days. He needs a bit of magic up front – someone that can win a game for you when you don’t play well,” he remarked.

In the post-match press conference, Arteta emphasized the importance of improving player connections, noting the limited time Bukayo Saka, Martin Odegaard, and Ben White had together on the pitch due to past injuries. Meanwhile, Neville maintained that Odegaard’s performance could reach new levels if Arsenal were to sign a player like Alvarez. “If there was an Ian Wright-type player up front for Arsenal who makes those short runs, he’d be even better,” Neville suggested.

Jamie Carragher, another pundit from Sky Sports, concurred with the sentiment that Arsenal requires an elite forward, observing that while Saka and Odegaard show promise of reaching world-class status, the team still lacks a standout player in their attacking unit. Carragher reflected on how Arsenal managed to win the league without Saka and Odegaard operating at peak performance, attributing their success to a strong defensive lineup and dependable goalkeeper. He remains hopeful that both players can regain their best form.

As for Arsenal’s transfer activity, Sky Sports’ Sam Blitz highlighted the club’s positive moves in the window. New signing Tzolis made an immediate impact, showcasing his skills after a slow five minutes, which included two shots and crafted opportunities within a short time frame. His involvement was crucial in the two goals that sealed the game against Coventry, first winning the ball high up before assisting Saka for the second goal.

The game’s context not only lifts Arsenal’s confidence but also sets the stage for potential future signings as they aim to fortify their squad for the ongoing season.
