Elon Musk claims SpaceX’s AI revenue will surpass all current offerings, highlighting ambitious plans for AI training and space data centers.

Elon Musk has made bold predictions regarding the future of SpaceX, suggesting that artificial intelligence (AI) will surpass all other revenue streams for the company. During a recent all-hands meeting with employees shared via X, Musk indicated that AI’s financial contributions are set to rise significantly.

“Probably our AI revenue — not probably, definitely — our AI revenue will exceed all other SpaceX revenue probably in September, like next month,” Musk stated. He further elaborated, saying, “And will significantly exceed all other SpaceX revenue in the fourth quarter.” This forecast signals a growing confidence in AI as a core component of SpaceX’s future operations.

Musk explained that the AI model, named Grok, would be trained on comprehensive data from SpaceX, including insights from its employees. “We’re going to be training Grok on the sum total of all SpaceX information,” he said, adding that the team would serve as the “parents of the AI,” contributing their thoughts, ideas, and beliefs to its development.

However, Musk did not elaborate on the methods for training Grok on employee data. His comments come in the backdrop of other companies, like Meta, facing scrutiny over their methods of utilizing employees’ data for AI training, which recently led to significant backlash.

In June, SpaceX completed a historic initial public offering, which allowed Musk to become the world’s first trillionaire. Following this, the company rebranded as SpaceXAI after acquiring xAI and is now focused on a range of innovative AI projects. Notably, SpaceX aims to launch data centers into space to train and operate its AI models. Musk has stated the company is committed to building using Nvidia technology exclusively, particularly their advanced Vera Rubin architecture.

In a strategic move, SpaceX also acquired AI coding startup Cursor for an impressive $60 billion. This acquisition took place in June as part of the company’s broader strategy to solidify its AI capabilities.

Apart from its burgeoning AI initiatives, SpaceX continues to offer a range of commercial products, including its renowned space launch vehicles such as Falcon 9 and Starship, as well as its Crew Dragon and Cargo Dragon spacecraft. The company also markets its satellite-network service, Starlink.

In its most recent earnings report on August 4, SpaceX revealed that AI had generated $2.56 billion of its total quarterly revenue of $7.81 billion. In contrast, its connectivity products yielded $4.29 billion, and its space products recorded $962 million for the quarter.
