Microsoft reveals details of employee AI spending, showcasing the internal tracking of AI tool usage among staff as competition increases in Big Tech.
An internal spreadsheet viewed by Business Insider shows hundreds of Microsoft employees voluntarily reporting not only their raises, bonuses, and stock awards, but also the dollar value of the AI tools they used over the past month. Microsoft is offering employees an internal tool to track their AI usage and spending.
The figures provide a rare glimpse into how AI is utilized within Microsoft as the company races against competitors like Meta, Google, OpenAI, and Anthropic to develop AI products.
Microsoft is part of a growing trend among Big Tech companies that are increasingly tracking AI consumption as they invest billions in models and infrastructure. This year’s spreadsheet included a new column where employees were asked to self-report their “AI $ Usage Per Month,” indicating the dollar amount of AI usage over the last 28 days. A Microsoft spokesperson mentioned that the AI usage tracking tool is still undergoing early testing.
The document featured nearly 600 entries from US employees when Business Insider analyzed the data, detailing reported base pay, raises, cash bonuses, and stock awards. About 350 of those entries included AI usage figures.
From those who reported their spending, the median AI usage amount was approximately $300 over the past month. Notably, the highest reported amount was $28,000, attributed to an employee within the Microsoft Customer and Partner Solutions organization.
Business Insider’s analysis made exclusions for teams or levels with few entries, and it was noted that the data is self-reported and may contain inaccuracies.
As businesses increasingly incorporate AI, understanding its financial implications and usage among employees is becoming vital to ensure optimal productivity and investment. The findings from Microsoft not only reflect internal practices but also mirror broader efforts in the tech industry to leverage artificial intelligence effectively.
