Aston Villa’s John McGinn expresses confidence as they prepare to take on PSG in the UEFA Super Cup, despite a squad transformation.

Aston Villa captain John McGinn has declared that the Premier League club possesses no limits as they prepare to face Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Super Cup in Salzburg. Despite the departure of several key players, McGinn and manager Unai Emery are optimistic about their chances against the reigning Champions League winners.

This upcoming match marks a rematch of their 2024-2025 Champions League quarter-final, which showcased Aston Villa’s potential against the best teams in Europe. Although Villa were eliminated with a 5-4 aggregate score, their spirited 3-2 victory in front of their home fans sent a message across the continent.

However, the squad Emery will field on Wednesday has changed considerably from that encounter. Significant players such as Morgan Rogers, Lucas Digne, and Youri Tielemans are no longer with the team, and midfield star Amadou Onana is sidelined due to a long-term injury. Additionally, key performers such as Emi Martinez, Ezri Konsa, and Ollie Watkins are unavailable as they recover from their World Cup commitments, leaving Emery with limited options for his starting lineup in Austria.

In spite of this reshuffle, McGinn remains steadfast in his belief that Aston Villa is progressing well. Having spent eight years at the club, he has witnessed its remarkable evolution from a Championship club to a contender in European tournaments. Taking on the underdog role, McGinn is eager to show skeptics that the Villans still have what it takes to compete at the highest level.

“A lot has changed in the eight years I have been here,” McGinn stated. “When you are signing the best young English talent and players are performing at the highest level there will be interest. We have a structure in place, standards and rules that have made us successful. I am really excited about the new Aston Villa. We have our main core, the same manager, same methods and same desire to achieve more. A lot of people thought we reached a ceiling a couple of seasons ago, and we proved them wrong.”

McGinn, known for his sense of humor, is not shy about pointing out the rare missteps of his accomplished manager. Emery, who recently won his fifth Europa League title with Villa, acknowledges that the Super Cup remains a trophy that has eluded him. He shared how McGinn has playfully reminded him of this gap in his trophy cabinet.

“He (pointing to McGinn) was reminding me last week (about losing to Chelsea),” Emery revealed. “Of course, it is an opportunity. A trophy is something that can give us a special moment. To play for trophies is, as a professional, our objective. PSG are the favorites, but I am looking forward to testing our strengths in this match against them.”

Villa faces a tough challenge in Salzburg, particularly given the squad’s significant changes since their last match against PSG. Nevertheless, the return of Boubacar Kamara, who is still regaining match fitness after a serious knee injury, offers a glimmer of hope. With over 6,000 Villa supporters expected to travel to Austria, the stakes are high for Emery, who is keen to finally secure the elusive trophy that has haunted him throughout his career.
