Eric Cantona retired in his prime but his legacy is immense. Who are the greatest players in Manchester United’s history? The Athletic has given Andy Mitten the task of compiling the top 25, and today we focus on one of the most iconic figures of the Premier League era.
Cantona played 185 matches, scoring 82 goals for Manchester United over five seasons. Only Duncan Edwards, who tragically died at Munich aged 21, played fewer matches in this exclusive list. However, Cantona’s contribution to the history of United is outsized for several reasons.
He was seen as the final piece of the puzzle that unlocked United’s first league title in 26 years. After finishing second to a Leeds United side partially inspired by Cantona in 1992, Manchester United executed a remarkable transfer coup when he signed in late November that year for just over £1 million. Following a rocky start where the team failed to score in four of their initial six games, everything changed with Cantona’s arrival. Within a month of making his debut, United hit the top position in the league.
“He brought priceless presence and style to the team,” said Sir Alex Ferguson in his autobiography. “He was not the overwhelmingly confident person many perceived him to be. He needed nourishing. Like most players, he liked to be told he was special.” Ferguson’s confidence in Cantona allowed him to thrive, becoming an integral part of a team that lifted the league title multiple times.
Cantona’s personality went well beyond mere statistics. He lived in a modest house in a Salford suburb, drank in local pubs, and frequented lesser-known theaters. His eccentricities were embraced by Ferguson, who crafted a culture that celebrated individualism.
United’s success surged, with Cantona leading the charge and inspiring the younger talents of the Class of ’92. Over five seasons, he collected four league titles and two FA Cups. His memorable winner against Liverpool in the final of the 1996 FA Cup was among his standout moments.
“The Cantona enigma was the talk of the game,” said teammate Roy Keane. “I liked him immediately. He glided into the arena like he owned the place.” Cantona’s controversial actions, including a kung-fu kick on a Crystal Palace supporter, only amplified his status among fans, who continued to stand by him through thick and thin.
Upon announcing his retirement, Cantona left the game at his peak, transitioning to a career in acting in Barcelona. His departure shocked teammates, as they had only shared a farewell hours prior. “It was sad for all of us, but I enjoyed one year playing with one of the best teammates ever,” said Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, reflecting on their incredible connection.
As we continue to honor the legacy of Manchester United’s greatest players, Eric Cantona’s impact remains a defining chapter in the club’s storied history.
