London Cyr’s Rise with Drake on ‘Iceman’

Producer London Cyr discusses his journey to working with Drake on the blockbuster album ‘Iceman,’ including insights into the creative process.

Vancouver-born producer London Cyr has made a significant mark on the music scene by landing seven production credits on Drake’s highly anticipated album, ‘Iceman.’ This milestone not only represents a career high but also fulfills a dream Cyr expressed back in 2021, when he first sought the chance to collaborate with the hip-hop superstar.

Cyr has contributed to standout tracks such as ‘National Treasures,’ ‘Plot Twist,’ and ‘Burning Bridges.’ His journey into music began during childhood, sparked by the loss of his father. Inspired by artists like Chris Brown and Eminem, he became fascinated with the art of music production. “I was like, ‘These people are telling their stories and releasing their energy through this music,'” he remarked.

To kickstart his career, Cyr learned how to use Logic software from a friend, leading to late-night sessions spent producing beats. Despite struggling in school and doubting a future in music, Cyr’s mother encouraged him to follow his passion. With a job at a retirement home, he saved up and eventually moved to Toronto, Canada’s music capital, where he gained valuable experience as a recording engineer.

While honing his craft, his talents caught the attention of notable producers, including WondaGurl. Their first session together resulted in the track “CAN’T SAY” for Travis Scott, which marked Cyr’s entry into mainstream music.

After contributing to a variety of artists, including NAV and Don Toliver, Cyr’s work eventually led to opportunities with Drake. Following his contributions to ‘100 GIGS’ and ‘Some Sexy Songs 4 U,’ Cyr was invited to collaborate on ‘Iceman.’

Throughout the process, Cyr and Drake fostered a unique creative relationship. Cyr recounted one of their initial conversations where Drake complimented him, saying, “Your beats remind me of one of my favorite movies, The Dark Knight.” This was an enormous compliment for Cyr, who expressed his admiration for the film’s score.

As they collaborated in the studio, Cyr was struck by Drake’s humility and respect. “He’s immensely talented…and the most blessed guy,” Cyr noted. He emphasized how Drake often allowed him the creative space and freedom to craft each track, saying, “Just give me beats when you’re ready, and I’m gonna be ready.”

Cyr shared insights into the production process for some tracks. On ‘B’s On The Table,’ they incorporated elements from a different beat at Drake’s request, showcasing the collaboration’s fluidity and ingenuity. Cyr added layers to ‘National Treasures,’ where he had a hand in crafting various beat switches that enhanced the song’s depth.

Drake’s swift decision-making process is something Cyr learned quickly. “He listens to beats really fast,” he explained. They discovered that Drake’s choices also reflect his mood and artistic direction for particular tracks.

Looking to the future, Cyr hopes to make significant contributions to Don Toliver’s upcoming projects, expressing a desire to replicate the collaborative spirit he experienced while working with Drake. As his career continues to flourish, his dedication to music remains unwavering.
