Moving from Los Angeles to Palm Springs was never on my radar. I considered Palm Springs as a sunny getaway just a few hours from the chaos of the city. My visits happened a few weekends each year, promising perfect winter weather and carefree days by the pool.

The COVID-19 pandemic shifted my perspective. Suddenly, Los Angeles felt confining. Like many others during that time, I yearned for a space that offered more room. Working remotely granted me the flexibility to move, leading me to choose Palm Springs for its lower population density, breathtaking vistas, and slower pace of life.

Initially, I intended to “wait out” the pandemic in Palm Springs before returning to LA, negotiating a lease for just six months. However, as those months stretched on, my attachment to the desert deepened, prompting me to renew my lease on a month-to-month basis.

One of the immediate advantages of life in Palm Springs was the proximity to nature and hiking. Even within the city limits, there were great trails waiting to be explored, with places like Joshua Tree National Park less than an hour away.

Diving in during those early days of social distancing, I took every opportunity to hike and enjoy neighborhood strolls showcasing stunning Modernist architecture and vibrant desert landscaping.

As restrictions eased and public spaces reopened, I found myself working with the Palm Springs International Film Festival, quickly becoming one of my favorite local events.

This job helped me forge friendships within a welcoming community of coworkers and volunteers while nurturing several meaningful intergenerational relationships that continue to enrich my life today.

Once the doors opened fully, I ventured out to enjoy live music events across the region, including shows at iconic venues like Pappy and Harriet’s and the popular Coachella festival. Being immersed in the arts, music, and cultural scene allowed me to connect with like-minded souls, helping me tap into the city’s vibrant cultural life.

By the time the pandemic peaked, the LA landscape had also transformed—many friends opted to move away. My roots in Palm Springs were deepening with newfound friendships and routines, so leaving was no longer an option.

Now, six years later, I find myself content in this desert city.

Living here also brought unexpected benefits. The short commutes and light traffic contrasted sharply with my experiences in Los Angeles, while parking downtown had become a breeze—most times free.

Then there’s the winter weather, predominantly sunny days with temperatures in the mid-70s.

While I miss the culinary diversity and late-night culture of LA, Palm Springs offers a fulfilling daily life. Given that the drive back to Los Angeles takes only two hours, I can easily visit for work and reconnect with friends.

Though I keep the idea of returning to LA in mind, I’m currently open to new opportunities. For now, Palm Springs feels like home.
