Jordan Henderson has been ruled out for the remainder of the World Cup as he requires surgery on a wrist injury sustained during England’s thrilling 3-2 victory over Mexico. The incident occurred when the 36-year-old midfielder awkwardly landed while climbing over the advertising hoardings in celebration.

Henderson’s injury was serious enough that he had to leave the field on a stretcher and was given oxygen before being transported to a hospital in Mexico City. Unfortunately, he was unable to return to the England training base in Kansas City with his fellow teammates; a member of the team’s medical staff remained with him in Mexico.

This setback is a significant blow for the former Liverpool captain, who, despite being an unused substitute in the match against Mexico, provides veteran experience to the squad. He recently marked his 90th cap for the national team during the group stage match against Panama, where he made a brief appearance.

After the match, England’s manager Thomas Tuchel expressed his sadness over the injury, stating, “I’m sad because Jordan injured his wrist. It’s quite serious. He’s in hospital. It doesn’t fit with the rest of the evening. I don’t know the procedure.”

Midfielder Jude Bellingham, who scored twice to help set up England’s quarter-final meeting with Norway, also weighed in on the situation, saying, “He (Henderson) is in a bit of bother, but our medical team have everything under control. I’m not best to give too much detail as I do not know much going on, but everyone was there to support him.”

As the tournament progresses without Henderson, England’s focus will shift to their upcoming matches and how they can adapt without the experienced midfielder in their lineup.
