Jamie Foxx Shares Insights on Leonardo DiCaprio

Jamie Foxx discusses working with Leonardo DiCaprio on ‘Django Unchained’ and reflects on his recovery from a recent health scare.

Jamie Foxx recently opened up about his experience working with Leonardo DiCaprio during the filming of “Django Unchained.” On Keke Palmer’s podcast, Foxx recounted how he felt intimidated by DiCaprio’s presence on set, leading him to add four inches to his boots to match the actor’s height.

Foxx, now 58, remembered feeling overshadowed during rehearsals when DiCaprio arrived on set along with Samuel L. Jackson. For six weeks, it had been just Foxx and Christoph Waltz, who played bounty hunters together. But upon DiCaprio’s arrival, Foxx felt the need to increase his height to make their shared scenes more balanced. “I can’t beat him,” Foxx said, referring to his height of 5 feet 9 inches compared to DiCaprio’s reported height of 6 feet. He asked the wardrobe staff to discreetly add extra height to his boots, insisting, “I just need 4 inches.”

During their first rehearsal, DiCaprio’s towering presence hit home for Foxx, who joked that the two actors casually strolled onto the set, vaping and gliding in slow motion. Despite the initial intimidation, Foxx expressed admiration for everyone’s talents, noting that Jackson often outperformed them in their scenes. DiCaprio agreed, labeling Jackson as “amazing.”

While reflecting on his professional life, Foxx also addressed his personal challenges following a health scare in 2023. He shared how he struggled after a stroke that left him with no memory for 20 days, stemming from a brain bleed. Foxx recalled the frustration of rehabilitation but told Palmer that humor played a significant role in coping with his situation. “They couldn’t do wellness checks on me, because I only had comedy to lean on,” he said.

His daughter, Corinne Foxx, chimed in during the podcast, recalling a moment when her father jokingly presented himself as Denzel Washington upon admission to rehab. This humor, Foxx explained, was crucial for his recovery. Reflecting on his health scare, he stated, “I couldn’t make sense of it,” but took comfort from the fact that he was one of the few who survived. “Less than 3% of people who experienced what I did leave alive,” he said. “We usually put them in a box,” one nurse told him, hinting at the severe nature of his condition.

As Foxx continues to recover, his return to public life brings hope to many. The combination of humor, resilience, and the supportive roles of family and friends has allowed him to navigate a challenging period in his life.
