Ireland Announces €125m Support Package for Ukraine

Ireland pledges €125m to Ukraine, including military aid and energy infrastructure support, as Taoiseach Micheál Martin visits Kyiv.

Ireland has declared a new support commitment of €125 million (£106 million) for Ukraine in the upcoming year, as confirmed by the government. This financial package comprises €100 million allocated for non-lethal military equipment and an additional €25 million aimed at restoring and safeguarding Ukraine’s energy infrastructure.

The announcement coincided with Taoiseach Micheál Martin’s visit to Kyiv, where he met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Martin condemned the ongoing conflict as an ‘unprovoked war of aggression,’ asserting that providing assistance to Ukraine remains a primary focus under Ireland’s EU presidency.

This latest pledge brings Ireland’s total support for Ukraine since the onset of the Russian invasion in 2022 to over €670 million (£571 million). The urgency of the situation was highlighted by Ireland’s Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade, Helen McEntee, who noted that Russia continues to target Ukrainian civilian areas and critical infrastructure.

McEntee stated, ‘Our support will help defend Ukraine from these brutal attacks.’ She emphasized that this funding aims to reinforce Ukraine’s resilience in the face of ongoing assaults.

Expressing strong solidarity with Ukraine, McEntee remarked, ‘Ukraine is a central focus of our EU presidency.’ She further reassuringly stated, ‘We are committed to supporting Ukraine’s EU accession path.’ This announcement marks a significant continuation of Ireland’s backing for Ukraine amid a concerning escalation of violence, with civilian casualties reaching their highest levels since the invasion began.

In light of this latest support initiative, both Martin and McEntee reaffirmed their commitment to standing with Ukraine, aligning with broader European efforts to provide humanitarian and military assistance in response to the current crisis.
