Instagram is initiating a push for AI creators to be more transparent about their identities. The social media platform plans to enforce stricter guidelines on accounts that mimic real people but are actually AI-generated.
Previously, there was an “AI Creator” label available for users, but it was optional. Now, Instagram has made it clear that if these AI-generated accounts do not use the new label, their content will not be recommended through the platform’s algorithm. In essence, Instagram is compelling these creators to acknowledge their AI status or risk diminished engagement.
The relabeling effort shifts from “AI Creator” to “AI-generated profile,” aiming for greater clarity and reducing the potential for user confusion between human and AI accounts.

Instagram stated in their blog post, “As generative AI becomes a bigger part of how people create, we’ve heard that people don’t like seeing a profile that seems human, only to find out later that the person featured is AI-generated.” This change appears to be a positive move for users on the platform.
The AI accounts in question are primarily those that represent themselves as real people—often presented as attractive women—and typically share lifestyle content similar to that of traditional influencers. One of the most notable examples is Lil Miquela, a computer-generated influencer who gained popularity prior to the recent surge in AI tools that enable the creation of lifelike images.
While the motivations behind these AI accounts remain somewhat unclear, they likely present opportunities for profit through influencer marketing and brand partnerships.
In addition to the new labeling requirements, Meta plans to actively seek out AI-generated profiles that attempt to pass as human and will flag these accounts. Until they add the appropriate tags, these accounts will not appear in content recommendations.
As generative technology shapes various aspects of digital content, Instagram’s efforts to increase transparency offer a necessary response to the challenges posed by AI-generated identities. The complexity of situations where users misidentify AI profiles adds urgency to this initiative.
Reactions to Instagram’s mandate for clearer labeling are mixed, and users are encouraged to share their thoughts regarding this policy update in the comments section.
