FIFA president Gianni Infantino recently unveiled an ambitious proposal for a 211-nation Under-15 World Cup, drawing inspiration from baseball’s Little League. The plan, which involved staging ceremonies at Walt Disney World, showcased Infantino’s intent to expand the global reach of youth football.

This concept was reportedly developed through extensive talks with private investors throughout the past year. The intention was to commercialize the Under-15 tournament while mirroring the fanfare commonly associated with youth baseball. During initial discussions, plans included a highly publicized opening match between Israel and Palestine, albeit the idea was set aside during subsequent deliberations.

The proposal aimed to follow in the footsteps of Disney’s elaborate orchestrations typical of large-scale events. As how the Little League captures audiences with its family-centric approach, Infantino envisioned a youth football tournament that could engage broader demographics, especially with the involvement of partners such as Eldridge Industries, which is chaired by Chelsea co-owner Todd Boehly.

Potential venues were also considered, including the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex situated in Orlando, Florida, within the Walt Disney World resort. However, tensions surrounding the opening match ultimately led to a reconsideration of this facet of the event. Delegates from both Israel and Palestine reportedly refused to shake hands during discussions at a FIFA Congress held in Vancouver, effectively halting hopes of showcasing the match as a gesture of unity.

As a result, the entire Under-15 World Cup proposal was recently shelved just before the upcoming 2026 World Cup. This decision is seen as a measure to spare FIFA from further criticism about the intense commercialization of youth football and the crowded international match schedules that have been discussed in recent years.

Despite the abandonment of the Under-15 project, Infantino’s aspirations remain undeterred. He continues to advocate for expanded global competitions and aims to secure lucrative broadcast rights in North America. Balancing revenue growth with player welfare remains a critical challenge for FIFA as it navigates the complexities of youth sports and the demands placed on emerging athletes.
