Coventry City striker Haji Wright is set to be sidelined for three months due to a serious injury, missing the Premier League opener against Arsenal.
Coventry City manager Frank Lampard confirmed that USMNT striker Haji Wright will be unavailable for the start of the Premier League season. Wright has sustained a severe quad injury that could keep him out for up to three months, impacting his participation in the highly anticipated opening match against reigning champions Arsenal.
In a press briefing ahead of the clash against Arsenal, Lampard expressed disappointment over the news. “Haji Wright won’t be available for the Arsenal game,” he stated. “He won’t be available for a little while; he’s got a very serious quad injury which is disappointing for Haji and for us. It’s certainly going to be a number of weeks – could even be up to 12 weeks.”
The injury represents a significant setback for both Wright and Coventry City, especially as the striker was gearing up for his top-flight debut. Last season, Wright shone with a hat-trick against Middlesbrough, illustrating the competitive edge needed for the upcoming season.
Wright’s absence means that Coventry will be entering their Premier League return without one of their key players. However, the club has acted promptly in the transfer market to reinforce their attacking lineup. This week, they signed two new strikers: Taiwo Awoniyi from Nottingham Forest for a reported £9 million and Sidiki Cherif from Fenerbahce.
Awoniyi comes with substantial Premier League experience, having netted 21 goals during his time at Nottingham Forest. He will enhance the competition for starting positions alongside Ellis Simms and Brandon Thomas-Asante. Coventry has also been active in the transfer market beyond these signings. The club has broken its transfer record four times this window, bringing in midfielder Caleb Yirenkyi for £23.1 million, ensuring the team is well-prepared for the demanding schedule ahead.
As Coventry gears up for their opening match against Arsenal, the team will need to adapt to Wright’s absence. Lampard has not ruled out further signings before the transfer deadline on August 31, as the club continues to strategize for their Premier League campaign. Meanwhile, Wright will embark on an extensive rehabilitation program, aiming for a return within three months to make his long-awaited debut in England’s premier competition.
