Fire at Shoe Factory in China Claims 28 Lives

A tragic fire at a shoe factory in Jinjiang, China, has led to 28 fatalities, prompting a call for accountability and safety reforms from President Xi Jinping.

A devastating fire broke out at a shoe factory in Jinjiang, a city in south-eastern China, claiming at least 28 lives, according to the state news agency Xinhua. The incident sparked significant concern, particularly given Jinjiang’s reputation as China’s shoe capital, producing around 20% of the world’s sports shoes.

The blaze erupted at the Huiteng Footwear factory shortly after noon local time on Thursday. Video footage shared on social media depicted large plumes of black smoke billowing into the sky, while many onlookers witnessed individuals apparently trapped on the roof.

As the situation unfolded, President Xi Jinping expressed his sorrow over the tragedy, labeling it as a major setback and underscoring the need for those accountable to be held “strictly accountable.” He further emphasized that officials must learn profound lessons from recent industrial safety incidents in the nation.

Emergency response teams quickly mobilized, with over 500 personnel deployed to manage the fire and conduct rescue operations. Approximately 240 individuals were present in the factory when the fire ignited. While 213 people managed to evacuate, reports indicate that two of these individuals later succumbed to their injuries in hospital. In total, 26 people were initially reported as missing but were later confirmed dead.

Preliminary investigations suggest that the fire may have started on the factory’s ground floor, which housed flammable materials. In response to the disaster, authorities have arrested several individuals connected to the factory, and the owners’ bank accounts have been frozen as part of the inquiry.

This tragic event has reignited discussions surrounding industrial safety standards in China, especially after the government had already initiated a campaign addressing fire hazards in high-rise buildings following a separate incident in Hong Kong that resulted in 168 fatalities last November. Xi Jinping has called for rigorous safety measures to be put in place moving forward.
