FIFA’s Governance Committee faces calls to deem Gianni Infantino ineligible for another presidential term, citing potential term-limit violations.
Concerns surrounding Gianni Infantino’s presidency at FIFA have intensified, with a letter now urging the FIFA Governance, Audit and Compliance Committee to disqualify him from standing for re-election. Infantino, who became president in 2016 following the organization’s previous corruption scandals, is currently facing accusations regarding his interpretation of term limits.
The letter asserts that Infantino’s first term should count as part of the three-term maximum allowed for FIFA presidents. Notably, Infantino maintains that his inaugural term did not count since it merely completed Sepp Blatter’s unfinished term.
This call for action comes from FairSquare, which has gained traction among various stakeholders, including backing from the Norwegian Football Federation. The group previously submitted an elaborate eight-page complaint to FIFA’s Ethics Committee, emphasizing allegations of repeated breaches of FIFA’s mandate for political neutrality by Infantino.
The controversy surrounding Infantino’s administration only escalated after recent incidents, such as the handling of U.S. forward Folarin Balogun’s suspension during the World Cup and proposed dealings involving FIFA’s events with private investors.
FairSquare’s letter, dated August 13, aims to ensure that Infantino’s potential run for a fourth term, which would extend his presidency until 2031, is halted. They emphasize the importance of adhering to FIFA statutes that limit presidential terms to three.
In a rare showing of unity, several confederations, including UEFA, Concacaf, and entities from Asia, have also expressed skepticism about Infantino’s leadership. This growing discontent has portrayed a rift between Infantino and major football governing bodies.
The letter highlights how the FIFA statutes stipulate that no individual may serve more than three terms without qualifying exceptions, which are currently not met by Infantino.
According to the letter, the decision made in 2022 by the Governance, Audit, and Compliance Committee to disregard Infantino’s initial term seemed to contradict the statute’s clear language. FairSquare insists this interpretation undermines the core intent behind the term-limit rule.
Additionally, the document warns that allowing the incumbent president to remain in power indefinitely through technicalities poses a threat to FIFA’s integrity and governance structures.
The concerns have been raised amidst a backdrop of ineffective accountability measures for Infantino’s various alleged abuses of power. Critically, the evolving composition of FIFA’s committees also factors into the current discourse on Infantino’s eligibility, suggesting that past decisions may not accurately depict the sentiment of the current committee members.
In light of these developments, FairSquare’s request presses for the current leadership to take immediate action, arguing that permitting Infantino to run for re-election would violate FIFA statutes and damage the organization’s credibility.
As the FIFA presidential elections loom next year, the outcome of this ongoing scrutiny remains uncertain. FIFA has yet to issue a statement regarding these latest appeals for governance accountability.
