European Power Prices Rise Amid Natural Gas Surge

TTF natural gas prices exceed €60/MWh due to Middle Eastern supply disruptions, impacting power prices across Germany, Netherlands, and the UK.

Recently, the price of TTF natural gas has surged past €60/MWh, fueled by ongoing disruptions in Middle Eastern supply chains. Florence Schmit from Rabobank points to increasing geopolitical tensions, particularly between the U.S. and Iran, that have resulted in a notable increase in gas futures.

As of July 23, TTF benchmark gas futures rose more than 15% over the span of eight consecutive sessions. This sharp increase is primarily attributed to the conflict in the Middle East and its direct impact on energy supply routes. Schmit explains that Qatar’s delayed efforts to boost LNG production in early July pushed TTF gas back over €50/MWh, a situation exacerbated by the latest uncertainties driving prices beyond the €60/MWh mark.

Looking ahead, Rabobank anticipates that gas prices will remain elevated into the latter half of 2026, which suggests that the potential for a decline in power prices may be limited. The reliance on gas-fired generation will become increasingly vital, especially in countries like Germany, the Netherlands, and the UK. Schmit notes, “Once winter demand replaces summer demand, gas-fired generation will again be needed to meet load, keeping power prices elevated and leaving markets exposed to renewed TTF upside.” This outlook suggests that power consumers in these nations may be bracing for increased energy costs as winter approaches.
