Drones seen over a German military base days after an explosive device was found at Leipzig airport, raising security concerns.
Two drones were spotted over a military base in western Germany on Thursday evening, just days after an explosive device was discovered at Leipzig airport. The base, located in Mechernich near Bonn, is reportedly used for storing components for the US-made Patriot air-defense systems.
The Bundeswehr, Germany’s armed forces, confirmed the sighting and stated that military police were deployed to the site before the local police took over the investigation. This incident is part of a worrying trend, as drones have increasingly been seen near military installations or airports across European nations that are providing support to Ukraine in its ongoing conflict with Russia. There are suspicions regarding the origins of these drones, although Moscow has consistently denied any involvement.
German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt remarked to the newspaper Bild that Germany has become a regular target for destabilizing attacks. “We’re not at war, but we are the daily target of hybrid warfare,” he stated.
Currently, Germany is investigating how another drone loaded with explosives managed to reach a runway at Leipzig/Halle airport, which is not only used by NATO but also serves as a base for Ukraine’s Antonov Airlines and the German military.
The Bundeswehr declined to comment on the ongoing investigation regarding the drones spotted in Mechernich when queried by the BBC. Local police confirmed they were looking into the matter.
According to German media, the Mechernich base functions as a storage facility for equipment and spare parts essential for maintaining the Patriot missile batteries. These defense systems have played a crucial role in Ukraine’s efforts to intercept Russian ballistic missiles since the full-scale invasion began in 2022. Nevertheless, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has recently appealed to allies for additional support, warning that Ukraine is running short on interceptor missiles.
After initially offering Ukraine the ability to manufacture Patriots locally in July, US President Donald Trump denied such an agreement just last week. The increase in drone sightings has sparked significant concern in Europe, prompting discussions among EU officials about establishing a continent-wide air defense system dubbed a “drone wall.” European authorities have pointed fingers at Russia for these incidents, a claim that Moscow has labeled as false.
The incidents have placed a significant strain on emergency services, already overwhelmed with responding to wildfires as a result of the dry summer. In a related occurrence, a drone was discovered near Ukrainian cargo planes, and another object collided mid-air with a cargo aircraft.
As the situation develops, the findings from ongoing investigations into the drone sightings will likely shape future security measures for military installations across Europe.
