David Beckham is reportedly in discussions to lead a takeover of FC Nantes, as the historic club faces challenges in Ligue 2.
Inter Miami co-owner David Beckham is reportedly looking to broaden his football club portfolio through a potential takeover of FC Nantes. The renowned French club currently finds itself in a dire situation, sitting at the bottom of Ligue 2 following a disappointing relegation from Ligue 1.
Recent reports from Ouest-France indicate that Beckham, a former Manchester United star, is part of a consortium interested in purchasing the troubled club. FC Nantes has reportedly received at least three takeover bids, including two from British investment firms. The involvement of Beckham has been mentioned during high-level discussions as the current owner, Waldemar Kita, explores a sale.
Despite its current woes, Nantes stands as an appealing investment. The club boasts a rich history, having claimed the Ligue 1 title eight times, and presents an opportunity for ambitious owners to revive its former glory.
However, the situation on the pitch is concerning. Nantes, popularly known as Les Canaris, has lost all three of its opening fixtures this season, leaving fans frustrated with the performance under the leadership of Polish businessman Kita. Since acquiring the club in 2007, Kita, along with his son and club CEO Franck, has overseen two relegations and the replacement of 24 head coaches in just 19 years.
A potential acquisition of Nantes would represent another chapter in Beckham’s growing engagement in football ownership, having already secured stakes in multiple clubs across North America and England.
Beckham’s journey in club ownership began when he exercised an option to secure an MLS expansion team in February 2014, a right that was part of his contract with LA Galaxy established back in 2007.
As Kita remains open to selling, ongoing negotiations will likely persist as other bidders finalize their proposals. Beckham and his investment group are expected to push to finalize terms to take control of FC Nantes. If successful, their immediate focus will be on stabilizing the club’s performance in Ligue 2 and laying the groundwork for a better future.
