Cristiano Ronaldo nears the milestone of 1,000 goals while speculations about his retirement grow, as former teammate Giuseppe Rossi shares insights.
Cristiano Ronaldo is closing in on an incredible milestone as he approaches 1,000 competitive career goals. The legendary Portuguese forward, now playing for Al-Nassr, has prompted discussions about the possibility of retirement once he achieves this remarkable feat. Former Manchester United teammate Giuseppe Rossi has weighed in on this topic, sharing insights with GOAL.
Ronaldo’s prolific career has seen him become a scoring sensation at Manchester United, Real Madrid, Juventus, and his current club, Al-Nassr. He holds the record for the most goals scored for Real Madrid, netting 450 times, and is recognized as the top scorer in men’s international football with 146 goals in 233 appearances for Portugal.
As the 2026 World Cup approaches, there are speculations that Ronaldo may have already played his final match at that level. The evergreen 41-year-old has sparked lively conversation about his role in the national team. Critics have suggested that he could be a distraction, while others believe he can continue to pursue playing until Euro 2028 and beyond. Portugal is also set to co-host the 2030 World Cup.
Currently, Ronaldo has tallied 977 goals overall, and the prospect of hitting that four-digit mark appears attainable within the next season. With his lucrative contract in Riyadh set to expire, questions arise about his future after reaching 1,000 goals. Rossi expressed, “Will Cristiano Ronaldo retire after he scores his 1,000th goal? Maybe. I think it’s still one of the reasons he’s continued to stick around because at this point it’s no longer about winning trophies or any other awards. It’s become personal for him to try and achieve everything he wants to achieve. He’s one of the most ambitious people out there in the world today, even outside of football, and if puts his mind to it, and wants to go beyond that 1,000th goal, he will go on and do that too.”
The former United striker continued, stating, “He’ll get there. He’ll score 1,000 goals. He’s already a player we should all celebrate, and a player to learn from, and when he does hang up his boots, he will rightly go down as one of the best players to play the game, ever.”
Rossi also noted the bittersweet nature of Ronaldo’s nearing retirement, expressing, “I do think that time is nearing for him, and that’s a shame because we want to see all these players play at every World Cup and keep bringing in the headlines. I wanted him to score in every single game. All the people that were talking about him, I wanted him to go and shut them up a little bit, and I mean he scored three goals at the World Cup at 41 years of age. I think that’s amazing but what a career and what a player.”
Ronaldo has maintained his presence at the top of the sport for over two decades, continuously being compared with his longtime rival, Lionel Messi. Both players are often discussed as candidates for the best to have ever graced the game.
As speculation continues about his retirement, Ronaldo’s future remains uncertain. However, it is clear that he has several exciting options to explore, including potential ventures in the film industry, once his storied playing career comes to an end.
