Cristian Romero confirms his transfer from Tottenham to Atletico Madrid, bidding farewell to fans after five impactful seasons.
Cristian Romero has announced his departure from Tottenham Hotspur as he prepares to finalize his transfer to Atletico Madrid.
The deal, reportedly worth around £34.2 million (€40 million), includes a sell-on clause for Spurs, allowing them to maintain a financial stake in the player’s future.
In a heartfelt message on Instagram, Romero expressed gratitude towards the club and its supporters. He reflected on his journey, stating, “Today, I say goodbye to a place that, for five seasons, was much more than a club. It was my home, my challenge and the place where my family and I built such an important part of our lives.” He added that he achieved his dream of making a lasting mark in the club’s history by helping end their 17-year trophy drought.

Romero, who has made a total of 124 appearances for Spurs, shared memories that filled him with pride, stating, “I leave with a heart full of memories and enormous pride for everything we lived and achieved together.” He acknowledged that although the journey wasn’t perfect, he prefers to remember the joyous moments and lessons learned.
Atletico Madrid has long shown interest in the Argentine international, and expectations were that Spurs would allow him to leave this summer if an appropriate offer was made. Romero had expressed a preference for moving to Atletico, despite interest from clubs like Inter Milan and their London rivals Arsenal.
Despite his departure, Romero leaves behind a mixed legacy at Spurs, highlighted by two red cards last season during a relegation battle. He received criticism for his commitment when he was spotted attending a match for his boyhood club Belgrano rather than being with his teammates for a crucial game against Everton. However, he ultimately chose to be present for the team’s final match.
Spurs have already made moves to replace him, bringing in defenders Jan Paul van Hecke and Marcos Senesi this summer. Reports suggest that they would likely take a loss on Romero, who originally joined Spurs from Atalanta for around £42 million in 2021.
Speaking on a Sky Sports podcast, Michael Bridge noted, “Spurs are not going to get the value for a player of his ability.” He commented on the disparity of fees that clubs receive when selling to domestic versus European teams, noting that Romero should command a higher price from a Premier League club.
The transfer marks a substantial moment not only in Romero’s career but also for Spurs, who are eager to move in a fresh direction after a challenging couple of seasons. Jamie O’Hara, former Spurs midfielder, shared his thoughts on the situation, suggesting that Romero had become more of a liability than an asset on the pitch. He insisted that it’s time for the club to transition from its current struggles.
Now, with the announcement of Romero’s move to Atletico Madrid, both player and club look to embark on new chapters as the summer transfer window progresses.
