Coco Gauff secures her first title in 10 months by defeating Jessica Pegula at the Cincinnati Open, boosting her confidence ahead of the U.S. Open.
Coco Gauff showcased her impressive skills at the Cincinnati Open final, where she achieved a convincing victory over Jessica Pegula. Gauff won the match 6-2, 6-4 in just over an hour, marking her first title in 10 months and setting her up as a strong contender for the upcoming U.S. Open.
The 17-year-old had a clear strategy going into the match, having displayed dominant form during the tournament. After a solid performance at the Canadian Open, where she reached the semifinals, Gauff’s confidence was palpable as she prepared to take on Pegula, a fellow American.
Sunday’s victory was reminiscent of Gauff’s previous success in Cincinnati three years ago, where she went on to win her first Grand Slam title at the U.S. Open just weeks later. This year’s tournament has been a significant step in her journey, having diligently worked on her game. A year ago, Gauff struggled with her serve and forehand, often double-faulting in crucial moments. However, with the guidance of biomechanist Gavin MacMillan and her coach J.C. Faurel, she has revamped her technique.
During the final match, Gauff unleashed her powerful serve, clocking speeds up to 123 mph, and displayed impressive topspin forehands that kept Pegula on the defensive for much of the contest. Though there were minor hiccups as she served for the match, Gauff maintained focus and composure, consistently breaking back whenever Pegula attempted to regain momentum.
As the match concluded, Gauff let out her joy, dropping her racket and raising her arms in triumph. She celebrated her win with her coach, expressing her gratitude for their hard work together. “What a difference a year makes,” Gauff remarked, reflecting on her journey from past disappointments to triumph.
After her victory, Pegula acknowledged Gauff’s remarkable performance during the trophy presentation, stating, “You were like a backboard today.” To this, Gauff laughed and humbly responded, “I don’t know— all the balls were going in for me today.” With this win under her belt, Gauff now heads into the U.S. Open with renewed confidence and determination, echoing her past successes and ready to make her mark once again.
