Chelsea Eye Henderson and Welbeck in Transfer Talks

Chelsea shows interest in signing Jordan Henderson and Danny Welbeck, holding positive talks for potential transfers to boost their squad.

Chelsea is reportedly showing interest in acquiring midfielder Jordan Henderson from Brentford. The 36-year-old England international is currently recuperating from an arm injury he sustained during the 2026 World Cup. Alongside this pursuit, Chelsea has also engaged in positive discussions regarding the signing of 35-year-old striker Danny Welbeck.

Several prominent clubs in the Premier League are clamoring for Henderson’s experience and capabilities, especially following his impressive performances at Brentford and with the national team since returning from Ajax in 2025. Brentford has made it clear to Henderson that they will not impede his departure should substantial offers come in. Though he has one year remaining on his contract, the club is open to allowing him to depart on a free transfer, depending on the interest from other clubs.

Henderson boasts crucial leadership skills, not to mention the experience that Chelsea hopes to integrate into their squad this summer. Earlier in the transfer window, Chelsea had also expressed interest in Granit Xhaka at Sunderland, although that deal didn’t come to fruition.

In addition to pursuing Henderson, Chelsea has initiated promising talks with Brighton for Welbeck. Brighton appears willing to facilitate a transfer as long as they receive a fair price for the striker, who has had a commendable scoring record, netting 13 goals last season and 10 in the campaign prior.

Welbeck’s addition would align with Chelsea’s strategy of prioritizing physically strong players with prior Premier League experience. The club has already set a new record by signing Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa for £117 million and is close to acquiring defender Maxence Lacroix from Crystal Palace.

This flurry of activity might indicate uncertainties surrounding the futures of Chelsea’s current strikers, including Nicolas Jackson and Liam Delap. Recent seasons have seen Chelsea approaching Brighton for talents; their main striker Joao Pedro, alongside Moises Caicedo and Marc Cucurella, have all made the switch to Stamford Bridge.

Interestingly, Chelsea’s recent recruitment from Brighton has also seen staff transfers, including sporting directors Paul Winstanley and Sam Jewell.

Commentary from Sky Sports’ Callum Bishop suggests Chelsea’s strategy of focusing on players in their mid-30s appears somewhat unconventional, especially given their previous focus on developing young talent. The club’s hierarchy seems to recognize a need for experience, reinforced by their decision to appoint Xabi Alonso as manager. Deploying greater emphasis on seasoned players could prove beneficial for the development of younger squad members.

While welcoming Welbeck could seem odd, it makes logical sense. With their current strikers averaging 23 years in age, the addition of a veteran like Welbeck—even as a backup—could provide invaluable experience in high-pressure situations.
