Joe Biden targets Donald Trump at a fundraiser, calling him ‘a loser’ for his vanity projects, as their political rivalry escalates ahead of the 2024 election.
Former US President Joe Biden unleashed a fierce denunciation of President Donald Trump during a recent Democratic Party fundraising gala, where he did not hold back in labeling Trump ‘a loser’ while criticizing his so-called ‘vanity projects’ in Washington, D.C.
During the Saturday evening event held in Hanover, Maryland, Biden focused on Trump’s ambitious plans for a new ballroom at the White House and his approach to renovating the Reflecting Pool in the city. This address comprised one of Biden’s most direct and cutting critiques of his political adversary to date.
Biden remarked, “It’s not just his vanity projects, tearing down the East Wing of the White House to make room for his ballroom, putting his name on the Kennedy Center, building an arch in his own honor, even hiring his own pool guy to fix the Reflecting Pool. Woah! What a loser,” he added, delivering this comment with a mix of scorn and incredulity.
His commentary caught widespread attention, particularly a reference to Trump’s pursuit of having his name emblazoned on the front of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts—a plan that has since been blocked by a court ruling.
In defense of his proposed ballroom, valued at $400 million, Trump has argued that demolishing portions of the East Wing is a necessity for national security and an appropriate way to host state guests. Meanwhile, Biden also highlighted Trump’s spending of $14.7 million to restore the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool—a venture that has drawn criticism due to subsequent issues with algae infestation, which Trump and the National Parks Service attributed to vandalism.
During his remarks, Biden did not shy away from addressing Trump’s past, particularly the January 6 Capitol riot. He expressed his outrage over Trump’s willingness to financially support the insurrectionists who stormed the Capitol, stating: “What makes me angry is that Trump wants to give taxpayers’ money, your money, to the January 6th insurrectionists.”
Biden’s comments seemed to refer to the Trump administration’s earlier efforts to provide compensation to individuals who claimed they were unfairly targeted or investigated by the government—an initiative that was ultimately halted by legal action.
So far, Trump has not issued a direct response to Biden’s criticisms but recently labeled him a ‘crooked politician’ on his Truth Social platform. He has also revisited his ‘sleepy Joe Biden’ moniker in posts about various issues.
The timing of Biden’s remarks is noteworthy, coinciding with the two-year anniversary of a debate performance that some perceive as detrimental to his 2024 presidential campaign. After that debate, some prominent Democratic figures suggested he should withdraw from the race, leading to speculation about Vice President Kamala Harris potentially stepping in, which did not materialize, as she ultimately lost to Trump in the preceding election.
With the 2024 election on the horizon, Biden’s comments reflect escalating tensions in the ongoing battle for political dominance between these former presidents.
