Jeff Bezos is part of a group seeking a 30% stake in Liverpool FC, raising questions from fans about the implications for the club’s future.
Amazon founder Jeff Bezos is involved in advanced discussions to acquire a 30% minority stake in Liverpool FC. This potential deal, involving a high-profile consortium, could change the financial landscape of the club, sparking both excitement and concern among supporters.
The proposed transaction, which could see Liverpool valued at £4.5 billion, would result in Fenway Sports Group (FSG) receiving £1.35 billion — a considerable profit from their initial £300 million investment in 2010 when they rescued the club from bankruptcy.
Football finance expert Kieran Maguire acknowledges that the deal could significantly benefit FSG, stating, “It’s a great deal for FSG. They generate more than £1bn from the deal and still keep control – this represents the best of both worlds.” However, this financial influx has not gone unnoticed by the club’s passionate fanbase.

While the consortium includes not only Bezos but also other wealthy investors, including Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin and Amit Bhatia, concerns linger regarding the implications for the club. Supporters recall past ownership issues and are pressing for transparency about the new stakeholders’ intentions.
The Spirit of Shankly (SOS), an independent supporters’ union, has taken the initiative to raise significant questions. A spokesperson stated, “We would like to know what the buying consortium will get in return for their 30% stake. Specifically, what would be the level of involvement in the control of the club and will they take a seat or seats on the board?” They also emphasized the importance of conducting due diligence on the consortium, questioning whether their motivations align with the club’s traditional values or if it is simply a case of trophy acquisition.
Despite the evident wealth of the investing group, BBC Sport has emphasized the reality that fans should not expect immediate increases in transfer spending due to Premier League financial regulations. The concern among supporters, particularly regarding the treatment of Amazon workers, adds another layer of complexity to the negotiation process.
Looking forward, while the consortium seeks to finalize negotiations with FSG, the immediate focus remains on whether this capital influx will genuinely enhance the team on the pitch or merely benefit existing ownership. The coming weeks are likely to be crucial in determining the future trajectory of Liverpool FC under the potential influence of Bezos and his partners.
