Beyoncé has committed to a personal donation of $1 million to assist in relief initiatives in Colombia after the devastating earthquake that recently hit the region.
A statement released by Parkwood Entertainment on Tuesday revealed that this substantial contribution will be utilized to supply food and housing assistance to the areas hardest hit by the 7.4 magnitude earthquake, which struck Chocó, Colombia, on August 10. The statement also encourages others willing to contribute to visit the websites of Food For the Poor and World Central Kitchen.
The tremor resulted in the tragic loss of at least 312 lives, according to reports, and left approximately 29,000 homes destroyed. The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs noted that about 69,000 residents in Chocó, amounting to nearly 10 percent of the local population, have been affected or displaced due to the disaster.
Beyoncé is among a growing number of artists who are publicly raising funds and making donations to support earthquake relief in Colombia. Shakira, a native of the country, recently met with local officials to assess the situation and has pledged $1.25 million to aid in rebuilding schools that were damaged. Her funding commitment includes $500,000 from the FIFA Global Citizen Education Fund, a matching $500,000 contribution from Live Nation, and $250,000 from CAF.
Shakira expressed her emotional response to the disaster, stating, “These past few days, I’ve watched my country suffer, but I’ve also watched people come together with the resilience and solidarity that has always defined us. Schools are more than buildings. They give children the stability and routine they need most after a disaster. That’s why we’re making an initial $1.25 million commitment to help rebuild schools and get children back into their classrooms. Chocó is not alone. Colombia is not alone. And we will keep going.”
Alongside Shakira, fellow Colombian artist Karol G has also made significant contributions by donating $1.2 million to help the earthquake victims through her foundation. In addition, the Colombian band Morat has announced their intention to donate a portion of ticket sale proceeds from their upcoming Bogotá residency to support the affected.
