Barcelona announces a €76.5m transfer agreement for Rodri from Manchester City, with personal terms expected to be settled soon.
Barcelona has officially reached an agreement in principle with Manchester City for the transfer of midfielder Rodri, valued at €76.5 million (£65.3 million; $87.8 million). The deal includes an upfront payment of €60 million (£51.2 million; $68.8 million), with additional achievable add-ons amounting to over €11 million. Manchester City anticipates that the final fee could reach at least €71.5 million due to Rodri’s expiring contract, which has less than a year remaining.
Personal terms with the Spanish international are not expected to pose any difficulties, as Barcelona plans to offer Rodri a four-year contract. Rodri, who played a pivotal role in Spain’s recent World Cup victory, had previously attracted interest from other clubs, including Real Madrid.
Before the current agreement, Barcelona had made a €45 million (£38.6 million; $52.1 million) bid on August 7, but City signaled that they would prefer closer to €80 million for the player. Reports from The Athletic indicated that Barcelona was exploring a move for Rodri, who expressed a clear preference to join the La Liga champions.

Having entered the final year of his contract with Manchester City, Rodri has shown no inclination to negotiate an extension. Should he finalize his transfer to Barcelona, he will reunite with seven fellow members of Spain’s World Cup-winning squad, including Joan Garcia, Eric Garcia, Pau Cubarsi, Gavi, Dani Olmo, Pedri, and Lamine Yamal.
Rodri is the 2024 Ballon d’Or winner, recognized for his exceptional performances during the tournament, where he scored the winning goal in the Champions League final in 2023. His move to Barcelona comes at a crucial time, as they deal with the absence of midfielder Frenkie de Jong, who is sidelined due to a torn medial collateral ligament in his knee.
Meanwhile, Manchester City has been active in the transfer market, securing England midfielder Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest in a deal worth £116 million ($155 million) this July. There are also plans to acquire Moroccan international Ayyoub Bouaddi, an 18-year-old talent from Lille, following his impressive showing at the World Cup.
Rodri initially joined Manchester City from Atletico Madrid in 2019, a tenure that has seen him win four Premier League titles, two FA Cups, three League Cups, and the Champions League, contributing 28 goals and 32 assists over 298 appearances.
