Aston Villa has signed former Bayern Munich midfielder Leon Goretzka on a free transfer to enhance their midfield options for the Premier League season.
Aston Villa has officially confirmed the signing of experienced German international Leon Goretzka on a free transfer, bolstering Unai Emery’s midfield ahead of the upcoming season. The 31-year-old joins Villa Park after an illustrious eight-year career with Bayern Munich, where he garnered numerous titles, including seven Bundesliga championships and the 2020 Champions League trophy.
Goretzka arrives as a free agent after his long tenure with the Bavarians ended during the summer. His addition comes as Villa faces significant changes to their squad, especially with key players exiting during the transfer window. Recently, Ezri Konsa left for Arsenal in a deal worth £51 million and Morgan Rogers made headlines with a staggering £117 million transfer to Chelsea. The situation worsened for Villa when midfield cornerstone Youri Tielemans transferred to Manchester United in July, along with Lucas Digne’s return to Paris Saint-Germain.
In his first official interview with VillaTV, Goretzka expressed enthusiasm about joining Aston Villa. ‘It’s a really good feeling to sign here,’ he remarked. ‘I had a bit of long vacation and it was a process to find out what I really wanted. From the first moment, I had a really good feeling, and I’m really happy to be here. I want to help the team to achieve their goals and to bring my experience that I have from my whole career. Let’s play a good season.’
Having faced Villa in European competition previously, Goretzka acknowledged the vibrant atmosphere at Villa Park, which influenced his decision. ‘I remember it was a really special atmosphere and crazy energy in the stadium. It wasn’t the best experience for us with Bayern, but for you, it was probably one of the best. I’m really looking forward to experiencing nights like this again,’ he reflected, referring to Bayern’s narrow defeat to Villa in their last encounter.
Goretzka is eager to adapt to the English Premier League, understanding that the intensity and competitiveness differ from the Bundesliga. He noted, ‘Obviously, for me, it’s a new league. I’m really looking forward to playing in these kinds of big games every few days, which is probably the biggest difference to the Bundesliga. In Germany, you have only several great games with big opponents.’
The German international will don the No. 27 jersey, previously vacated following Rogers’ high-profile move. Aston Villa’s season gets underway with a challenging match against reigning champions Arsenal at Villa Park, after suffering a heavy 4-0 defeat to Brighton in their opening fixture.
