Apple TV’s Matt Cherniss shares insights on Emmy nominations and the anticipated return of shows like ‘Widow’s Bay’ and ‘Severance’.

Apple TV executives are celebrating their remarkable Emmy nomination performance, achieving an impressive 87 nominations this year, the best showing for the platform thus far. This success comes across just 15 programs out of only 31 titles submitted for voter consideration, significantly fewer than some competitors.

Matt Cherniss, the head of programming at Apple TV, expressed excitement about this accomplishment, stating, “This just reinforces our strategy, the ‘quality over quantity’ approach to programming that continues to reward us.” He added that this approach benefits the talented individuals who join Apple TV to create content.

Leading the list of nominations is the fresh horror comedy “Widow’s Bay,” which garnered 19 nominations, including a nod for best comedy series. Following closely is the new drama series “Pluribus,” which earned 18 nominations, including best drama. Other shows such as “Shrinking,” “Slow Horses,” and “Palm Royale” also received multiple nominations.

Despite some previous heavyweights like “Severance” and “Ted Lasso” not competing this year, Apple TV has still managed to excel. Cherniss discussed the surprise success of “Widow’s Bay,” noting the unique strategy in targeting the right audience at the right time. “You never know how long it will take for the audience to find something or to embrace it,” he said.

Cherniss reassured fans of the returning series, confirming that both “Severance” and “Pluribus” are set to return, although he did not provide specific dates yet. The excitement about the return of “Severance” particularly emphasized its importance to the streaming service, aiming to build on the momentum from its previous two seasons.

On the potential renewal of “Widow’s Bay,” Cherniss indicated quick action on their part. He explained, “I felt like we moved pretty quickly. We certainly tried to time the announcement a little more toward as the season was building, so that there was a little momentum.” He is optimistic about the show’s future and hinted at the talents behind the scenes, including the show’s creator, Katie Dippold.

Cherniss is keenly aware of the challenges ahead but remains hopeful. “There will be time for that as the year goes on,” he stated regarding the ups and downs of production timelines. Despite the hurdles in shooting locations, he emphasized the tireless effort of everyone involved in bringing these series back.

As anticipation grows for upcoming seasons, Cherniss reflects on the balance between audience expectations and the creative process, stating, “With a show like ‘Severance,’ the most important thing is that we deliver on sort of what those epic first two seasons delivered, and then it even gets bigger from there.” The challenges of production are many, but the Apple TV team is dedicated to delivering high-quality content that resonates with viewers.

Overall, the programming head’s insights reveal not just the excitement surrounding Apple TV’s current nominations but also its commitment to continue evolving while remaining true to its audience.
