Julian Alvarez Rejects Manchester City and Arsenal Moves

Julian Alvarez has turned down returns to Manchester City and Arsenal, aiming for a transfer to Barcelona as tensions with Atletico Madrid rise.

Julian Alvarez has categorically rejected a return to Manchester City, despite interest from Enzo Maresca’s team in re-signing the Atletico Madrid striker. The Argentine remains entangled in a complicated summer transfer saga, prioritizing staying in Spain over a move back to the Premier League.

Alvarez has firmly dismissed the opportunity for a return to the Etihad Stadium, following interest expressed by the Cityzens. The striker informed Manchester City that he has no desire to return before an official bid was launched.

The 26-year-old’s refusal comes amidst a standoff with Los Rojiblancos, marking this as one of the most significant transfer stories of the summer. While Alvarez is considered Arsenal’s prime target and dream signing, he has turned down opportunities from the Gunners on several occasions.

Rather than accepting a move to either London or Manchester, Alvarez is fixated on joining Barcelona, who previously made a €100 million (£86 million) bid that was unsuccessful. Barcelona president Joan Laporta confirmed ongoing interest in Alvarez, stating it’s “common knowledge” that the forward wants to come to the Catalan club.

However, Atletico Madrid maintains a firm position and is refusing to negotiate with their La Liga rivals, asserting a “zero per cent chance” of selling Alvarez to Barcelona.

Reports indicate that Alvarez’s strong reluctance to return to England is influenced more by personal factors than by his football career. The Argentine is aware that UK visa regulations could create complications for his family visiting him, while residing in Spain poses no such issues.

This situation differs markedly from Alvarez’s earlier stint in England. He originally joined Manchester City from River Plate for £14 million in January 2022, scoring 36 goals in 103 appearances and aiding Guardiola’s squad in achieving a historic Treble before transferring to Atletico for £82 million two summers ago.

Despite indications that Arsenal represents Alvarez’s only feasible route out of Atletico, he remains steadfast in his intention to stay in Spain. Thus, the forward is left in a tough position, caught between a cow unwilling to facilitate his desired move to Barcelona and his own reluctance to head back to England.

With City officially turned down and Atletico firm in their refusal to engage with Barcelona, the high-profile transfer saga finds itself at a complete standstill. Alvarez now faces a choice: either rebuild relations in Madrid or hold out hope for some sort of breakthrough before the transfer window closes.
