Julian Alvarez was absent in Atletico Madrid’s 2-0 win over Malaga as fitness concerns overshadow ongoing transfer speculation linked to Barcelona.
Julian Alvarez missed out on participating in Atletico Madrid’s opening match of the La Liga season, watching from the sidelines as the team secured a 2-0 victory against Malaga. His omission has sparked intense speculation surrounding his future, particularly regarding a potential transfer to Barcelona.
Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone addressed Alvarez’s absence, explaining that the decision was based on his fitness levels following his international commitments with Argentina. “Julian is an extraordinary lad. We spoke, as we always do… We need more training sessions with him. He’s the best player we have in attack, I’ve said that and I still think that. I want to build a team around him,” Simeone stated.
During the match, Ademola Lookman filled the striker role, playing the entire match and contributing to Atletico’s success with goals from Kang-in Lee and Alex Baena in the second half. Alvarez’s absence from the squad raised questions, especially since he has been linked to several clubs, including Arsenal and Barcelona. Interestingly, his desire for a transfer has been tempered by Atletico’s firm stance, which includes a staggering release clause of €490 million.
Despite Simeone’s assertion that he intends to integrate Alvarez into the squad, the player has reportedly voiced his disappointment about the situation. Reports suggest the forward had a candid discussion with Simeone, reiterating his interest in leaving for Barcelona, which has further complicated the matter.
While Alvarez’s performance in training has reportedly been affected by his frustrations, Simeone remains hopeful about the player’s potential contributions. Notably, while Alvarez was absent, other players who also had international duty, like Baena, participated and made impactful contributions to the game, prompting further discussion about the management of player fitness.
As Atletico prepares for their next fixture against Villarreal on August 23, the relationship between Alvarez and the club remains a focal point, especially as the transfer window narrows. With Atletico demanding an improbable fee for Alvarez, the player’s immediate future appears to lie in Madrid, pushing Barcelona to explore alternative attacking options if they remain unable to fund such a significant transfer.
