Mo Zohourian shares his journey from job hunting to becoming an AI trainer earning $100 an hour, highlighting the evolution of his career.
In a remarkable career transformation, Mo Zohourian turned his job-searching struggles into a lucrative career in AI training, earning $100 an hour. The journey began when he moved to Canada from Iran in 2023, bringing with him 15 years of experience in entrepreneurship and sales management. Despite his strong background, he faced persistent challenges finding a full-time job, undergoing nearly 10 months of interviews without success.
In his search for opportunities, Zohourian stumbled upon an advertisement on LinkedIn offering AI training work for $15 per hour, with no prior experience required. Skeptical but determined, he decided to give it a try, keeping his new venture a secret from his wife until he received his first paycheck.
Fast forward a few years, and Zohourian has built a thriving career around AI. He now specializes in AI evaluation with a focus on sales management, and his consulting services for small businesses further supplement his income. His success is compounded by the launch of Annotation Academy, a platform designed to train others in AI evaluation.
Initially, like many freelancers, Zohourian faced inconsistent work. However, after a few months, he secured a project paying $30 an hour. By taking and passing various assessments in English literature, reasoning, and mathematics, he advanced to earning $35 an hour. As he gained experience—working across multiple companies—his hourly rate fluctuated, reaching as high as $70.
The turning point came when opportunities in sales projects began to materialize. With his extensive sales background, he quickly established a track record of high-quality work, paving the way for higher-paying assignments. For the past 10 months, Zohourian has consistently earned $100 an hour as a sales manager expert on high-stakes projects.
Over time, the complexity of the tasks has evolved from simple evaluations to more sophisticated assignments involving agentic AI and advanced models. Zohourian made a pivotal decision to stop pursuing full-time positions around three months into his AI training journey, realizing that he had found his true calling.
Typically dedicating 20 to 40 hours a week to AI training, he enjoys the flexibility of freelance work, which allows him to balance his professional and personal life. His current efforts are directed towards running his consultancy and expanding Annotation Academy. He secured his first client in this endeavor through a social connection he made at a party.
Zohourian acknowledges the intense workload, often stretching from early morning to late at night. However, the ability to set his own schedule affords him precious time with his son. He emphasizes that this lifestyle contrasts significantly with the constraints of a traditional full-time job.
While his businesses are performing well, he has chosen to invest profits back into his ventures instead of taking a salary, enabling future growth. Starting his training career with some savings provided him the breathing room needed during initial inconsistencies in work.
The demand for professionals skilled in AI evaluation is high, and Zohourian’s experience has shown him the rapid advancement possible in this field. Reflecting on his journey, he notes that despite 15 years in sales, he never encountered the swift progress he has experienced in AI training. This new career has not only changed his professional trajectory but has also enriched his personal life.
Zohourian’s experience serves as a testament to the transformative power of embracing new opportunities, even when they arise unexpectedly.
